Acharya Brojendra Nath Seal College was established in 1888 as Victoria College by Maharaja Nripendra Narayan to enhance the student capability in the Kingdom.[3] The first principal was J.D.Godley and the first Indian was Acharya Brojendra Nath Seal who remained in the post for eighteen long years from 1896 to 1913.[3] In 1950, when the Princely state of Cooch Behar was annexed to Union of India, the governance was passed to Government of West Bengal. It was earlier affiliated to the University of Calcutta and is currently affiliated to University of North Bengal after the creation of the same. In 1970, it was renamed as Acharya Brojendra Nath Seal College.[3] It is one of the few colleges under University of North Bengal to have postgraduate education.
