Joan Peters (born 1938) is a former CBS news producer of otherwise unnamed documentaries, and the author best known for a number of theses on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, put forward in her book From Time Immemorial, published in 1984.
Even though it was praised by the likes of Elie Wiesel and Saul Bellow, and received warm critiques from publications the book is now widely regarded as a fraud[1][2]. Norman Finkelstein examined From Time Immemorial in his doctoral thesis at Princeton University slamming it as a "monumental hoax"[3] and later wrote about the book in Blaming the Victims: Spurious Scholarship and the Palestinian Question (1988) and Image and Reality of the Israel-Palestine Conflict (1995).
Joan Peters book was again brought up into public debate during the Dershowitz-Finkelstein affair when Finkelstein accused Alan Dershowitz of plagiarising From Time Immemorial on the background of the background of, amongst other things, identical misquotations of Mark Twain [4].
Peters has also written for magazines such as Harper's, Commentary, The New Republic, and The New Leader in the 1970s and early 1980s and has helped create a series of TV news documentaries for CBS in 1973 regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and provided commentary on the subject for PBS.
During the Carter administration Peters served in the government as lecturer on issues related to the Middle East to State Department officials. Peters served as White House Adviser on American Foreign Policy in the Middle East during the Carter Administration. She is currently a trustee for the National Committee on American Foreign Policy, where she serves on its executive committee.
