Elena Stejko Ukrainian born actress/casting director/acting coach Elena Stejko has lived in New Zealand for the past 15 years. A student at the Kiev University of Culture, Stejko has taught the Chekhov and Stanislavsky acting methods for 8 years. [1]
Early Life
The Russian-born actor and director has studied at the University of Culture in Kiev from 1987-1991, and worked as an actor and young director for various theatre companies in Russia. In1993, Elena started tutoring the Russian Acting Technique in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she also worked as a freelance director and actor with the “Teatro de Banco do Brazil”.
In 1995, Elena moved to New Zealand where she continued her teaching based on the Stanislavsky and Chekhov acting techniques in Auckland, Wellington, and Sydney. Recently, Elena travelled to Tokyo, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Milan, Basel where she met with other practitioners, taught workshops, and worked with talented directors.
She has been working in the industry for 20 years collaborating with other artists, always striving to create original work. Elena has directed plays and performance pieces. She has worked as an actor in Russia, Brazil, New Zealand, and Japan.
Her recent screen work was the lead role in Russian Snark - a New Zealand feature film, and the lead role in The Promise, a feature drama in Tokyo, Japan.
During her time in NZ, Elena has also worked extensively as a casting director for 10 years, and co-written the script for the New Zealand feature film Rain with director Christine Jeff. [2]
Career
Stejko is an accomplished actress, singer and dancer, and has appeared in television productions Mercy Peak and Shortland Street, as well as directing several theatre productions. In her latest on-screen role, Stejko appears in the feature film Russian Snark, as Nadia, the wife and muse of a tortured artist. She brings an authenticity to the role that is at times haunting and heart-warming.[3]
Stejko has recently played Lady Capulet in Romeo and Juliet at the Maidment Theatre.[4]
Awards
Stejko has just been nominated for Best Actress at the 2010 Qantas Film and Television Awards for her portrayal of Nadia in Russian Snark.
