Teenage Dream[3] is the third studio album and second mainstream album by American singer-songwriter Katy Perry. It was released on August 24, 2010 in the United States.[4] The album's lead single titled "California Gurls" featuring Snoop Dogg was sent to US radio on May 7, 2010.[5] The album is projected to sell in the range of 170,000 to 200,000 units in its first week of release.Cite error: A <ref>

Perry started recording the album on October 13, 2009, stating that she has "lots of layers to get through, thankfully Greg Wells is there to do the peeling". It has been announced that she is working with numerous artists and producers including Greg Wells,[6] Guy Sigsworth,[6] Dr. Luke,[6] Max Martin,[7][6] Ryan Tedder,[8] Rivers Cuomo,[7] Thaddis "Kuk" Harrell,[9] Greg Kurstin, Benny Blanco, Darkchild, Cathy Dennis, Ester Dean, The-Dream and Christopher "Tricky" Stewart, who told Rap-Up magazine in December 2009 that the sound of the album will be pop/rock, the same sound as One of the Boys. He added: "It’s a different gear for me. This is a very important project for me ’cause people are waiting to see what I’m gonna do".[10]
Development
As for the visual component, Perry likens it to "going from Shirley Temple, Betty Boop to more of a Betty Paige, pop art-sarcastic-fun-Lichtenstein picture: still bright, but the colors are more saturated, and it's more metallic fuchsia or purple than bubblegum pink."[11]
On March 27, 2010, at 2010 Kids' Choice Awards, Perry told MTV News that the album is "coming out this summer. It's a summer record". She added that her previous teases about the album still fit. "It's what I said I wanted earlier," she told MTV. "We nailed it: It's roller-skating! It's '90s! It's Ace Of Base! It's Cyndi Lauper! It's like all these colors and more". She also said that there "might be some really cool guest appearances by some cool rappers from the West Coast. I mean, you'll just have to see, since I'm a California girl, you know. And then some best friends might be appearing. ... We'll see!. It's going to be fun. It's going to be one of those records that is everybody's favorite guilty pleasure".[7] Perry has also stated that the album is inspired by ABBA and The Cardigans. According to Perry, she gave her producer Dr. Luke a mixtape of songs by the two groups in order to demonstrate how she wanted her next record to sound. Perry described the album as "more groove-driven". She added, "When I went on tour, as much as I love all the in-between songs, I felt I was missing some of the stuff that made people bounce up and down."[12]
During a Rolling Stone photo shoot in April 2010, Perry revealed details about a song on the album, called "California Gurls", allegedly a response to Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind", she stated: "It’s so great that 'Empire State of Mind' is huge and that everyone has the New York song, but what the fuck? What about LA? What about California?. It's been a minute since we had a California song and especially from a girl's perspective. We took the references of Prince, which is always a great reference, and some of the '90s, almost house music references".[13] The song features California rapper Snoop Dogg.[14] USA Today gave the song a positive review: "Potential single California Gurls, with Snoop Dogg, is an effervescent toast to summer fun".[14] Perry also spoke about working with producers Max Martin and Dr Luke: "Working with Max Martin and Dr Luke was a wonderful collaborative effort, I worked with them on the first record ['One of the Boys'], and of course I wanted to come back and work with them even more on this record, so instead of it being two songs we have six or seven on this record now".[13]
On April 30, 2010 Perry stated that it's the last day of recording the album and thanked Greg Wells, one of the producers. On May 5, 2010, Perry shot the album cover. On July 21, 2010, the official album cover[15] was premiered via a live webstream with Will Cotton, at the Will Cotton's Art Studio.[16] On July 23, 2010, the album's official track listing was posted on Perry's official website.[17]

Metacritic scored Teenage Dream as having an averaged score of 55 out of 100, based on nine reviews, indicating mixed reviews from critics.[18] Mikael Wood of Spin gave a mixed review and noted, "Teenage Dream won't disappoint parents looking for reasons to worry about their kids ... Perry delivers the gurl-gone-wild stuff with requisite sass, but she actually sounds more engaged on 'Not Like the Movies' and 'One That Got Away'".[26] Leah Greenblatt wrote for Entertainment Weekly, "Beneath the fruity outfits and fart jokes, Perry is clearly serious about the business of hit songcraft; that doesn't make Dream nearly cohesive as an album, but it does provide, intermittently, exactly the kind of high-fructose rush she's aiming for".[22] Rob Sheffield from Rolling Stone commented "It sets the tone for Teenage Dream, Perry's album about Cali girls ... Throughout [the album] she chases an all-American teen-pop sound that's older than the Hollywood Hills".[24] Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune gave a negative review to the album. He critiziced the production, calling it a "Frankenstein-like", as well as the Perry's vocal protuction "(she sounds robotic, like a wind-up toy incapable of singing with any elegance or nuance)", and he noted at the end of his review "With music as rigidly formulaic as this, no wonder the teens in her songs want to party until they blank out".[21]
Singles
"California Gurls" featuring rapper Snoop Dogg is the lead single from the album. Capitol Records sent the song to U.S. radio on May 7, 2010.[29] The song became available as a digital download on May 11, 2010.[30][31] The song spent six weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has sold over three million digital copies to date.[32]
The album's second single is its title track, which was released to radio stations on July 22, 2010.[33][34] Jocelyn Vena of MTV said it "picks up right where 'California Gurls' leaves off. With a strong beat to back her up, Perry sings about a boy who makes her feel like a teenager again" after hearing it at a listening event in New York City.[35] The following day the single was released via iTunes. The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number twenty and has since reached number five.[36]
According to Billboard, "Firework" will be the third single from the album and is due for release in October 2010. The music video is set to include competition winners from eastern Europe.[37]
Promotional singles
Prior to the release of the album, three promotional singles were released exclusively on Apple's iTunes Store as a countdown to Teenage Dream. "Not Like the Movies" was released on August 3, 2010,[38] and made a début of 53 on the Billboard Hot 100[39] before falling from the Hot 100 the following week.[40] "Circle the Drain" was released on August 10, 2010,[41] as the second promotional single and entered the Billboard Hot 100 at 58.[40] The final promotional single, "E.T.", was released the following week on August 17, 2010.
