History
Dharmsinh Desai Institute of Technology (DDIT) was founded in 1968 by Dharmsinh Dadubhai Desai, who then was a Member of Parliament, as an institution of higher learning in the field of Engineering and Technology. It achieved an 'Autonomous' status under Gujarat University in 1991 . It received a Deemed University status in June 2000[2]. In April 2005, Dharmsinh Desai Institute of Technology achieved full University status and was renamed as Dharmsinh Desai University (DDU). Under the flagship name of DDU, the university has also started a bachelor's course in Dental Surgery from 2005. It was known as Dharamsinh Desai College until granted university status in 2005.DDU is famous for its discipline throughout india and it is the first university of gujarat to get permission of starting nanotechnology course from 2012.
Status
DDU[3] achieved autonomous university status in 1991 which meant it could conduct exams and not follow the parent university Gujarat University examination schedule (though the degree certificate awarded still retained the name of Gujarat University). It achieved a Deemed University status in June 2000, which meant that the degree certificates show that they are awarded from DDIT. In April 2005, DDIT achieved full University status and is renamed as DDU which is an abbreviation for Dharmsinh Desai University. Under the flagship name of DDU, the university has also started a bachelor's course in Dental Surgery from 2005.
Prof. H.B Dave was the first head of computer science department. One of its flagship branch “Computer Engineering”, Computer engineers graduated under Prof. H B Dave, are working around the world in recognized companies including Microsoft, GE, Oracle, Infosys, TCS, Wipro etc.
The Faculty of Technology of DDU was formerly known as DDIT, is headed by Dr P A Joshi as Dean. He is an alumnus of DDIT, UDCT Mumbai, IIT Bombay and IIM Ahmedabad. The Faculty of Technology is having very high reputation and has been recognised as Anchor Institute for Chemical and Petrochemical Sector by Industries Commissionerate of Gujarat State. Very recently, it has established Shah-Schulman Centre for Surface Science and Nanotenlogy with Prof. D O Shah (Professor Emeritious-University of Florida, USA) as its Founding Director. The centre has been sanctioned Rs.35 Million by Department of Industries and Mines, Government of Gujarat and has giant industries like Asian Paints Ltd. and Sun Pharmaceuticals Ltd. as its Industrial Founding Members. The Faculty has several links with industries such as Reliance Industries Ltd for R & D, KHS Germany for training students abroad, Infosys for students training under campus network. It also has a MOU with University of Iowa, USA for BE+MS 5 year integrated program. Due to his reputation only every year in gujarat board admissions its merit is excelling n excelling.

Rankings
In 2007, Outlook magazine ranked the Institute of Technology, Dharamsinh Desai University as the 7th best Private Engineering College in India. It has been ranked in top 25 engineering colleges by India Today in 2007 and 2009. Also, it has been ranked among top 13 private engineering colleges in India in 2009.The latest rankings from EFY (Elecctronics for you) magazine has updated Institute of Technology, Dharamsinh Desai University to rank 6 in All India amongst private colleges and rank 4 in general rankings in West Zone. DDU is considered to be the best engineering college of Gujarat after Nirma University of Science and Technology. In July 2010, DDU Ranked 5th Among Top Emerging Colleges of India in Competition Success Review 2010.
