Lecrae Moore (born 1980) is a Christian rap[1] artist signed to Reach Records.[2] Lecrae resides in Atlanta, Georgia hosting hip-hop related events, volunteering at the local juvenile detention center as well as Kids Across America Kamps in Branson, Missouri, and engaging with ReachLife Ministries.[3] Also, as a member of the 116 Clique, Lecrae ministers at various campus and community venues. Lecrae has received two nominations at the 38th Annual GMA Dove Awards. One was for his song, "Jesus Muzik", which also featured Trip Lee; and the other nomination was for his second album, After the Music Stops.[4] He has recently been nominated for Hip Hop/Rap Recorded Album of the Year by the 40th Annual GMA Dove Awards.[5] He has received reviews from various magazines including Rapzilla, which specifically noted his style and his second album, After the Music Stops, has been called, "one of the best CDs I have heard in 2006. Lecrae's flows are clever but straight to the point and his delivery is very clear." He also got his name from the bird, Crae.[6]
In his music, Lecrae uses the word "Crunk" to refer to a spiritual high felt through Christ.[7]
Musical career
Early years (2003–2005)
Born and raised in Houston, Texas by a single mother, Lecrae became a Christian at age 19. Lecrae began rapping about his faith and co-founded Reach Records in 2005 releasing his first album Real Talk through it in 2005.[8] The album gained critical acclaim and charted at #29 on the Billboard Gospel albums chart.[9]
After The Music Stops (2006–2007)
After the success of "Real Talk" Lecrae released his second studio album on August 15, 2006, the album charted at #5 On the Billboard Gospel Albums chart, #7 on the Billboard Christian albums chart and #16 on the Billboard Heatseeker album charts.[10] The album was nominated for a Dove award as was the single "Jesus Muzik".
Rebel (2008–2009)
On October 8, 2008, Lecrae's third album, Rebel, entered the Billboard charts at #60 with 9,800 units sold. It also ranked #3 on the iTunes rap downloads, and topped the Billboard Christian album charts for two weeks, the first rap album to do so.[citation needed] The album gained some of the highest praise for Christian Hip hop yet with Jesusfreakhideout saying the following about it "Musically, it's easily as good as (if not better than) anything you will hear on mainstream rap stations. Lyrically, there's no comparison. Lecrae's message is better, and better for you. " The album has of April 2010 maintained a 78 week run on the Billboard Gospel charts. It has sold 125,000 as of July 7th. [11]
