The mechanical Bond is one type of chemical bond. Unlike the covalent bond, the mechanical bond falls into the category of noncovalent bonds which includes such bonds as hydrogen bonds and ionic bonds. The mechanical bond differs from these in that it involves two covalent species which are interlocked in such a way that neither species can separate without the dissociation of colvalent bonds. As such it can be said that the two covalent species are bound together with a mechanical bond. Examples of the mechanical bond include catenanes, rotaxanes, and molecular Borromean rings.
