Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, known in Japan as Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX (遊☆戯☆王デュエル モンスターズGX Yūgiō Dyueru Monsutāzu GX) is an anime spinoff of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise. A manga version made by Naoyuki Kageyama (影山なおゆき Kageyama Naoyuki) is published in Shueisha's V-Jump magazine in Japan.

In North America, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX is distributed by Warner Bros. Television Animation and 4Kids Entertainment. GX stands for Generation NeXt.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX starts out with the lead character Jaden Yuki (Judai Yuki in the Japanese version) obtaining a card, Winged Kuriboh (Hane Kuribo), from Yugi Muto (Yugi Mutou in the English manga), the renowned Duel Monsters champion. Yu-Gi-Oh! GX follows the exploits of Jaden and another female character named Alexis Rhodes as Jaden goes to a duelist academy, named Duel Academy. The academy was created by Seto Kaiba on a remote island, with its dormitories named after the three Egyptian God Cards. In the chain of the Egyptian God Cards, the most elaborate dorm and the highest of the God Chain, Obelisk Blue (オベリスク・ブルー Oberisuku Burū), is named after the God Card Obelisk the Tormentor a.k.a. The God of the Obelisk (Obelisk no Kyoshinhei (オベリスクの巨神兵), Kaiba's card. Those who earn the highest scores are sent to the Obelisk Blue dorm and wear blue suits to symbolize their highest ranking. The center dorm and the middle of the God Chain, Ra Yellow (ラー・イェロー Rā Yerō), is named after The Winged Dragon of Ra a.k.a. Sun Dragon Ra (Rā no Yoku Shin Ryū (ラーの翼神竜), Marik Ishtar's card. Those who were given regular or average scores are granted yellow suits to symbolize their middle ranking in the God Chain and are given dorms that are similar to Obelisk Blue's, but with less pleasantries. The lowest quality dorm, Slifer Red (Osiris Red, オシリス・レッド Oshirisu Reddo in the Japanese version), is named after Slifer the Sky Dragon (Osiris no Tenkūryū (オシリスの天空竜 in the Japanese version), Yugi's card. Those who failed completely or scored from low to lowest are given red suits to symbolize their low ranking in the God Chain and are given shoddy dorms. The naming choices reflect Kaiba's grudge against Yugi for losing to him. Produced by Nihon Ad Systems Inc., or NAS for short, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX started airing on TV Tokyo in Japan on October 6, 2004. The anime has been licensed by 4Kids Entertainment and is currently airing in in North America at 5pm Eastern time on Cartoon Network's Miguzi block.

Jaden Yuki (Judai Yuki)

Names are in Western order, with the surname after the given name.

  • Judai Yuki (遊城 十代 Yūki Jūdai) / Jaden Yuki - Jaden Yuki is the main character, who has to live in the worst dormitory of the duelist academy, Slifer (Osiris) Red. 15-year old Jaden gets the rare Winged Kuriboh (Hane Kuribo, ハネクリボー Hane Kuribō) card from Yugi Muto (Yugi Mutou in the Japanese verson), the famous duelist from the original Yu-Gi-Oh! series. Jaden's deck is a Elemental Hero series Deck. Jaden's spirit partner is Winged Kuriboh.
  • Asuka Tenjouin (天上院 明日香 Tenjōin Asuka) / Alexis Rhodes - 15-year old Alexis is a strong female duelist from the Obelisk Blue dormitory, which is the highest-level dormitory of the academy. Her family name in the Japanese version has been written as "Tenjoin", "Tenjouin", "Tenjyoin", and "10 Join" in Roman characters.
  • Sho Marufuji (丸藤 翔 Marufuji Shō) / Syrus Truesdale - 15-year old Syrus is the weaker younger brother of Zane Truesdale and a friend of Jaden. He is in the Slifer Red dorm. Syrus looks at Jaden as his older brother since (he feels) his real older brother Zane is ashamed of having a weakling as his brother (In the original anime, Ryo is less ashamed as more wishing for his brother to learn from his mistakes). Syrus uses a Vehicroid series Deck. Syrus later become a part of Ra Yellow.
  • Ryo Marufuji (丸藤 亮 Marufuji Ryō) / Zane Truesdale - 17-year old Zane Truesdale is Syrus's stronger older brother. He is in the Obelisk Blue dorm. Nicknamed "the Kaiser (A German title meaning "emperor)", Zane is (at least his brother assumes) ashamed of having a weaker younger brother, so Zane and Syrus do not keep in contact. Later it is revealed that Zane in fact does love his younger brother and Zane helps Syrus on different occasions. Zane uses a deck that revolves around his Cyber Dragons and the various formation they can be used it.
  • Jun Manjoume (万丈目 準 Manjōme Jun) / Chazz Princeton - 15-year old Chazz is another strong duelist from the Obelisk Blue dorm. Chazz uses several decks throughout the series. He greatly dislikes Jaden, though as the series continues, they come to a shakey truce. Chazz's family pressures him to do his best, as his two brothers are a famous businessman and politician. Chazz, after losing to Bastion, left the school and later returned, only to be put in Silfer Red Dorm with Jaden. Chazz uses a rotating lineup of monsters, including Armed Dragon, Chthonian Soldier, and the VWXYZ series. However, he always uses the Ojama Trio in the later episodes as his trump cards. Ojama Yellow is Chazz's spirit partner, though Ojama Green and Ojama Black show up as well. Chazz has a huge crush on Alexis.
  • Cronos de Medici (クロノス・デ・メディチ Kuronos de Medichi) / Dr. Vellian Crowler - 35-year old Vellian Crowler is the leader of the Obelisk dorm. Crowler holds a grudge against Jaden who he believes to be a slacker and tries to get rid of him on many occasions. He uses a Ancient Gear series Deck.
  • Daichi Misawa (三沢 大地 Misawa Daichi) / Bastion Misawa - An analytical 15-year old who uses seven different decks (Six elemental decks and one "Anti-Jaden" deck) to beat his opponent. He is a Ra Yellow student. Bastion has a British accent in the dub. So far, he has used a Water Deck, an Earth Magnet deck, and has a known Fire deck that has yet to appear.
  • Hayato Maeda (前田 隼人 Maeda Hayato) / Chumley Huffington - Another one of Jaden's friends, 16-year old Chumley has a face that resembles that of a koala. Chumley is in Jaden's dorm. He uses a beast deck that focuses on Austrialian animals. Chumley's father, Kumazo Huffington (Kumazo Maeda), is a famous duelist and, in the Japanese version he has a drinking problem involving sake, while in the English version, the owner of a successful hot sauce company. Towards the end of Jaden's first year at Duel Academy, Chumley leaves the school to work with Maximillion Pegasus (Pegasus J. Crawford in the Japanese version) as a card designer.
  • Tyranno Kenzan (ティラノ剣山 Tirano Kenzan) - A new student to Duel Academy introduced in episode 53, formerly a Ra Yellow but transfered to Silfer Red. He uses mostly dinosaur cards.
