3OH!3 (pronounced "three oh three") is an electro hop group from Boulder, Colorado, the douchiest place on EArth, according to most people. The band is best known for their song "Don't Trust Me" from their second album Want, which reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100, and for their collaboration with Ke$ha, "My First Kiss", from their third album Streets of Gold, which peaked at number nine. They're also very well known and distinct from other bands because of their energetic personalities and performances. They encourage their audience to get into their music as much as they themselves do. Their second single, "Starstrukk" with Katy Perry from their second album Want, was a top ten hit in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Finland and Australia.[1]
History
Beginnings and self-titled album: 2004–2007
3OH!3 formed in 2004 and was named after the 303 area code,[2] which includes Boulder as well as the Denver metropolitan area. Sean Foreman and Nathaniel Motte met in a physics class while attending the University of Colorado. Off of their first album they released one single, "Electroshock".
Want: 2008–2009
3OH!3's second album, Want, was released on July 8, 2008. It reached number 44 on the Billboard 200.[3] The lyrics for "Don't Trust Me" have been controversial, as some have accused the band of misogyny.[4] The song reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100. The band contributed an original theme song titled "Sex on the Beach" for The Real World:Cancun.[5] 3OH!3 also wrote an anthem for Major League Baseball's Colorado Rockies.
As they were getting started they performed at small venues around Colorado such as the Aggie Theater in Ft. Collins, Colorado, where crowds were lined up outside the door hours before the start of the performance. After playing in Denver during the Warped Tour 2008, 3OH!3 signed on for all venues of Warped Tour 2008. The band performed in Panama City Beach, Florida for MTVU's Spring Break in March 2009, opening for upcoming rapper Sid Hyet. After their spring break performance they came back to their hometown area and performed at The Mile High Music Festival at the Dick's Sporting Goods Center along with other artists such as The Fray, Pepper, and Matisyahu. The band later headlined the 2009 Alternative Press Tour across the U.S. 3OH!3 played at EndFest in Sacramento, California, and was part of Kiss Concert '09 at the Comcast Center in Mansfield, MA. They played at Kiss The Summer Hello 2009 at Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo, New York, June 3, 2009. 3OH!3 joined the Warped Tour once again in 2009. In summer 2009 they appeared at the Reading/Leeds festivals in the UK.
The band was featured in a 14-page photo spread in Cliché Magazine's "Green Issue" in August 2009.[6] They released a remix of their second single, "Starstrukk," featuring Katy Perry digitally on September 8, 2009.[7] It was a top ten hit in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Finland and Australia.
3OH!3 were featured on the Kesha song "Blah Blah Blah". A new song, "Follow Me Down", was written for the compilation album for the film Alice in Wonderland with Neon Hitch. The pair also supported All Time Low, Boys Like Girls, Third Eye Blind, and LMFAO on The Bamboozle Roadshow 2010.
Streets of Gold: 2009–present
3OH!3 was featured on the track "Hey" by Lil Jon on his Crunk Rock album in 2010. On February 5, 2010, it was announced that Cobra Starship and 3OH!3 would be embarking on a co-headlining tour called The Too Fast for Love Tour. They are currently on their tour and will be visiting their hometown in the month of November.Streets of Gold was released on June 29, 2010. Ke$ha was featured on the song, "My First Kiss".[8] Later they would start a new tour with Hellogoodbye and Down with Webster, after their international tour. They also sang the song "Double Vision" in simlish for The Sims 3 Late Night expansion pack.
On August 31, 2010 professional wrestler "Diamond" Dallas Page filed a lawsuit against 3OH!3 for copyright infringement of his trademarked "Diamond Cutter" symbol. The gesture is made by connecting the thumbs and index fingers of one's hands in a single vertical plane. Page's gesture is meant to be in the shape of a diamond to correspond with his wrestling nickname, while 3OH!3's gesture is meant to symbolize the bands's name with the middle finger, ring finger and little finger representing the number three on either side of the empty space created by joining the index fingers and thumbs which represents the 'OH'. The lawsuit is for unauthorized use of the copyrighted logo which was used to promote the band. Page previously filed a similar lawsuit against rapper Jay-Z in 2005 which resulted in Page dropping the lawsuit for an undisclosed amount of money.[9][10][11]
