Skepta |
---|
Joseph Junior Adenuga, better known as Skepta, is a British MC from Tottenham, London. Originally from and born to Nigerian parents he moved to London aged three. He is a producer and DJ commonly associated with the North London Grime scene, including Roll Deep.
He started his music career after he won a MC battle with over 300 people contesting beating Tempa T in the final. He also formed a partnership with his brother JME and became renowned throughout Greater London for his hit single (he also produced), "Private Caller" which featured many of his Meridian Crew from Meridian Walk in Tottenham.
Life & career
Skepta has performed all over the world including in the United States, Italy, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Czech Republic, Sweden, Germany, Cyprus, Switzerland, Belgium, France and Holland along with many other countries whilst also making the bill of UK festivals Glastonbury and V. Having already featured on MTV Base ‘About to Blow’, graced the pages of magazines from i-D, One Week to Live to Dummy to RWD to Blues & Soul. Skepta was also chosen to perform in the Radio 1's Big Weekend in 2008, 2009 and 2010 which was very successful and is known as the "King Of Grime".
His main target is to make grime music 'mainstream' in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States. So far, alongside accomplices like JME, Frisco, Shorty, Giggs, Jay Sean, Jammer And C Gritz , he has helped to increase the levels of 'spitting', and has produced and created grime hits such as “Duppy”, “Stupid”, “R U Dumb” and “The Large Way”. On 15 March 2010, Skepta released Bad Boy, his debut single off the album 'Doin It Again'. It reached number 26 in the UK Singles Chart.
On April 1 2010, P. Diddy, Via his twitter account, announced that he'll do the official remix of "Hello Good Morning" with a grime artist and asked his followers who to select. After some days, Diddy announced that even though he personally wanted Wiley to do the Grime remix, the artist that the majority of his followers selected was Skepta and that in a few days he'll record the remix with him.
On 15 April 2010, Skepta tweeted "Aarrgghh I swear my new Album "DOIN IT AGAIN" is a Straight #FaintingTing", implying that his new album will be called "Doin' It Again".
On the 27 June 2010 Skepta released his single Rescue Me on the record label All Around The World. It reached Number 14 on the UK Singles Chart, and Number 6 on the United Kingdom R&B Singles Chart.
On August 3rd 2010, Skepta debuted his official UK Grime Remix of Diddy-Dirty Money's song Hello Good Morning live on Kiss 100 on DJ Logan Sama's show.
On October 17 2010, Skepta is expected to release his single "Cross My Heart" featuring Preeya Kalidas.
Boy Better Know
Skepta (Managing Director) along with brother JME (CEO) & Wiley began their grime label Boy Better Know in late 2005. The phrase "Boy Better Know" was originated by Big H the artist. This phrase was then taken by Skepta and JME. Early 2006 saw the release of 'Shut Yuh Mut' - Boy Better Know Edition 1 which features all 3 artists and throughout the years has contributed and aided many other artists such as Frisco and Wiley to put out mixtapes, along with JME (4 mixtapes) and Skepta's September 2007 release 'Greatest Hits', which was distributed nationwide. However now, Wiley has left because he found mainstream chart success with Roll Deep, a crew that he co-founded and has enjoyed two number one hit singles with on the UK Top 40 Chart. He also had an ongoing 'beef' with Skepta, with both artists creating diss tracks, Wiley's 'Barnet' and Skepta's 'House in the Country' were both uploaded onto YouTube by both artists.
After the success of Bad Boy, Skepta's videos were removed from his own channel and promoted through AATW (A division of Universal Records). His tracks were also premiered on the official website of the label. It is expected that 'Doin' it Again' will be either released on or in partnership with AATW records.
