Since the McCarthy era and the blacklisting of many talented artists in the film industry, the Academy looked for a way to right the wrongs of that regretful time, and because no one showed to picked-up the Oscar for Best Original Story awarded The Brave One, it was a convenient way to award an Oscar to Dalton Trumbo for his work before his death. The Academy is not to blame here, it was the King Bros, the producers of The Brave One who misrepresented the true authorship of The Brave One’s story, and they were able to do this because my father was ill with cancer and passed away before filming. The Brave One is a 1956 American drama film directed by Irving Rapper and starring Michel Ray, Rodolfo Hoyos Jr., and Elsa Cárdenas. The Brave One won the 1957 Academy Award for Best Story, and was nominated for Best Film Editing and Best Sound.
The writer was originally credited as Robert Rich, a pseudonym used by Dalton Trumbo. Trumbo, who was not presented with the Academy Award until 1975, was blacklisted as one of the Hollywood Ten in 1947 for being a member of the American Communist Party.
“The Brave One” was Juan Duval’s story, not Dalton Trumbo’s story.
