Stefano DiMera (alias the Phoenix) is a fictional character, a villain on the American soap opera Days of our Lives. Created by head writer Margaret DePriest, he is portrayed by Joseph Mascolo.[2] Stefano is the father of Renée DuMonde, Megan Hathaway, Benjy Hawk, Lexie Carver (née Brooks), Elvis Aron Banks (who also goes by the name EJ Wells),and Chad Peterson Woods, and the stepfather of Antony DiMera; He also raised Peter and Kristen Blake and for a while the gemini twins Rex and Cassie Brady . He had a nephew, André DiMera, who through plastic surgery became identical in appearance to Antony. Stefano is the current husband of Kate Roberts. He is also the ex-husband of Vivian Alamain. Stefano first entered the show as an organized crime kingpin. Soap Opera Digest named him the all-time best villain.[3]
History
Stefano arrives in Salem, bringing his estranged nephew Andre DiMera, to retrieve the Baka. Stefano has Andre's face surgically altered to look like that of his son, Tony's. Andre chains up Tony, and begins the Salem Stalker, stabbing and poisoning his victims, while wearing a mask to look like Stefano's nemesis, Roman Brady. Andre steals the Baka, and Stefano uses it to create a bomb, designed to kill Marlena Evans, thus tearing down the DiMera's most hated family, The Brady's. Stefano's plans are foiled, and he makes a daring mistake. During his escape, his limo plunges into the Salem river. The driver's body is found, but Stefano's is not. He is presumed legally dead.[4]
Meanwhile, Stefano retreats to his yacht, after suffering a massive inoperable brain tumor. His health lies in the three prisms.[5] He sends his nephew, Andre after one being held by the Brady's. Andre plans a plane crash on a deserted island, including several of Brady family members, such including Roman Brady. Stefano and Roman struggle on top of a cliff, where Roman falls to his death. The Phoenix steals his body, and the prism. Back in Salem, learning about his daughter, Megan Hathaway's death he seeks even more revenge on the Brady family. He kidnaps Marlena Evans twins, Sami and Eric Brady. Stefano and Marlena get into a struggle on top of an ice rink, during a big show. He drops on of the prisms, thus setting the rink on fire. He falls off the rafter after Marlena shoots him, his body is believe to have perished on the burning ice rink.[4]
Stefano returns to Salem in 1988, and retrieves his son Benji Hawk. He sends clues to Roman, that Marlena is still alive. Unable to get his son, Benji, he kidnaps Roman's daughter, Carrie Brady. Kidnapping Carrie, leads the Brady family and ISA Agent Shane Donovan to his island. Angry at Roman for Benji's deafness, he activates the chip in Roman's head, which is programmed for him to kill his family. Roman comes out of the trance, and Benji learns that his father is truly evil. Stefano escapes from the island on his helicopter.[4]
In the 1990s a now wheel-chaired Stefano returns to Salem. He brings his adopted child, Peter & Kristen. Learning that Belle Brady's true father is John Black, and not Roman Brady he forces Marlena to tell the truth at Belle's christening, thus ending her relationship with Roman. John fights with Stefano on Kristen's wedding day. John shoots Stefano's car, which explodes. Stefano retreats to Maison Blanche in Louisiana. He imprisons John, kidnaps Marlena, and secrets away with Hope believing she is a woman named Gina. Celeste torches the mansion, and Stefano tries to escape with Hope during a hurricane. After going missing, he is yet again believed to be dead.[4] However, he retreats back to Salem, and buys an apartment directly next to Marlena Evans. He constructs a secret door from his bedroom, to her closet. Marlena nurses Stefano helping him recover to full health. Stefano is hospitalized after suffering a heart attack, at Kristen's funeral. Hope learns she is Hope, and not Gina. The real princess Gina locks Stefano up in her castle, and Hope learns she is pregnant.[4]
In 2000 a satellite causes Hope to forget all about her life as Gina. Stefano curious as to who is the father of her baby, and engineers a swap between her baby, and Doctor Rolf's pregnant alcoholic niece Marlo, and Lexie and Abe Carver. This causes Bo & Hope to get back together, and John and Roman join forces to take out Stefano, he escapes.[4]
In 2006 John, and Marlena track Stefano down to an oxygen tent in an Italian hospital to learn that Stefano is EJ's father. In a few months, EJ brings his sick father back to Salem. Stefano needing stem cells for a recovery, orders his son to kidnap Sami Brady, and steal her baby's stem cells. When EJ refuses, Stefano takes matters into his own hands.[4] The Brady Family begins to investigate the longtime feud between the Brady's, and The DiMera's. Stefano, and his son take great chances making sure the Brady's don't learn the truth. The Brady's find out that Tony, is actually Andre posing as Tony. When Stefano's health begins to deteriorate, Andre murders Benjy and takes his liver to help his ailing uncle. Sami learns she is carrying twins, and confirms that EJ is the father of one twin. Stefano makes a deal with the Bradys to end the Brady-DiMera feud. Sami will have to marry EJ to put the feud between the two families to an end. After the twins are born, Stefano wants the wedding to happen soon. Sami and EJ are quickly married. EJ is shot at his wedding to Sami, and the shooter is revealed to be Lucas Horton. John Black is murdered by a hit and run, and Marlena seeks revenge. She believes Stefano is the reason that John was killed. She threatens him if he will not let Sami leave EJ. Stefano lets Sami leave EJ, but only if Marlena marries him. Marlena refuses, and vows she will kill Stefano for all the pain he has done to her family. It is revealed that Stefano, and his insane Doctor Rolf are hiding John in their basement. EJ finding John in the basement reveals the information to Marlena, and Sami. Stefano is arrested by the Salem P.D. While in prison, Marlena trugs him putting him in a trance and reveals the information of the Brady-DiMera feud. Marlena learns that John is actually Stefano's half brother.[4] Stefano is released into a hospital, but quickly recovers. He marries his wife, Kate DiMera in 2009,[6] after helping her escape from being charged with poisoning.

Stefano's "deaths"
This list includes times Stefano faked his death, was presumed dead, or was reported dead by others.
- A stroke in 1983.
- His car plunged into the icy waters of Salem's harbor during a police chase in 1984
- Marlena shot him, and he fell from a catwalk as the building caught fire in 1985 (he also had a brain tumor)
- In 1991, he was presumed to have died in another fire and cave collapse.
- In 1994, his car erupted into a fireball after being shot at by John.
- Also in 1994, he drowned near Maison Blanche.
- In 1996, he died in a plane explosion.
- Again, in 1996, he was blown up and buried under collapsing tunnel during confrontation with Rachel Blake. This was his last depicted "death" until 2007.
- In 2002, Andre DiMera (posing as Tony) claimed that his uncle had died from injuries sustained from a car crash in Monte Carlo.
- In 2004, when Marlena and the presumed dead Salem Stalker victims found a blackened, unrecognizable corpse on Melaswen, Andre (posing as Tony) claimed it was Stefano. Andre said he had killed Stefano by draining his blood so Andre could cure his own blood disease.
- In 2007, his death was faked once again. As a setup by the Salem P.D., Steven "Patch" Johnson appeared to stab Stefano to death, but he was drugged and a fake funeral was setup to lure Andre.
- In 2009 he had a heart attack, but survived.
