American R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles began her career in the late 1990s as the lead singer of one of the best-selling American bands of all time, Destiny's Child, who have sold around fifty million records worldwide.[1] Her discography, as a solo artist, began in 2003 and includes three studio albums, twenty singles as a lead artist, ten as a featured artist, ten soundtrack and promotional singles, three live albums, two extended plays and four video albums.
In June 2003, during the hiatus of Destiny's Child, Knowles released her debut solo album, Dangerously in Love, which became one of the most successful albums of that year, and signaled her viability as a solo artist. The album was a commercial and critical success, spawning the worldwide hits "Crazy in Love", "Baby Boy", "Me, Myself & I" and "Naughty Girl". Knowles became the first female artist (and the fifth artist ever) to top both the singles—with "Crazy in Love"— and albums chart simultaneously in the United States and the United Kingdom, following The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Rod Stewart, and Men at Work.[2] Dangerously in Love earned Knowles a then record-tying five five Grammy Awards in 2004. It remains as Knowles' best-selling album to date, with sales of 4,688,000 copies in the United States, as of July 2009.[3] The album has sold more than 11 million copies worldwide.[4]
The disbanding of Destiny's Child in 2005 facilitated her continued success, with the release of her third US #1 single and worldwide hit, "Check on It" recorded for the soundtrack to the film, The Pink Panther, featuring Slim Thug[5] and later included in her sophomore solo album, B'Day (2006). Much of the theme and musical style of the album were inspired by Knowles' role in Dreamgirls.[6] B'Day became her second solo number-one album in the US, selling 541,000 copies in its first week[7] and was also successful in international music markets and yielded six singles, including three worldwide hits, "Déjà Vu", "Irreplaceable", and "Beautiful Liar". Other releases included "Ring the Alarm", "Get Me Bodied", "Green Light", "Listen" and "Upgrade U" It earned her the Grammy Award for Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album at the 49th Grammy Awards.[8] The album has sold more than 6 million copies worldwide.[9]
Her third solo album, I Am… Sasha Fierce, was released in November 2008. It is classified as a dual disc album; the first disc I Am... incorporates slow and mid-tempo R&B ballads and pop songs, while the second disc Sasha Fierce, named after Beyoncé's alter ego, contains more uptempo danceable songs which cross from Euro to electropop.[10] It includes "If I Were a Boy"; her 5th US #1 "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)", hit "Halo" and her 13th US top 10 "Sweet Dreams", "Broken-Hearted Girl" , "Video Phone" with a remixed version featuring pop singer Lady Gaga, whose debut on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart made I Am... Sasha Fierce become the first album of the 21st century to have seven entries on that chart.[11] "Video Phone" also became Knowles' fourteenth number-one Hot Dance Club Songs chart-topper.[12] The last single to be released was "Why Don't You Love Me". The album earned Knowles 8 nominations for the 52nd Grammy Awards. Knowles also received an additional two nominations for her work in the film Cadillac Records.[13] Eventually, Beyoncé earned six Grammy Awards, breaking the record for most Grammy Awards won by a female artist in one night.[14][15][16] Knowles is one of the most honored artists by the Grammys, and third among female artists, with 16 awards—13 as a solo artist and three as a member of Destiny's Child.[17][18] As of July 2010, the digital tracks from the album have sold a combined total of 12,305,000 units in the United States.[19] and as of September 2010, shipment has reached over seven million copies worldwide and sales of the album are at over 6.7 million copies.[20]
Knowles is currently the only artist in history to have all her studio albums win the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album and debut at the number one spot in the Billboard 200 throughout her solo music career.[21]
Knowles has attained five Hot 100 number one singles as a solo performer and four with Destiny's Child. As a solo artist, Beyonce has sold over 11.2 million albums and nearly 25 million singles in the United States.[22] According to Sony, her total album and single sales, when combined with the group, have surpassed 100 million.[23] On December 11, 2009, Billboard listed Knowles as the most successful female artist of the 2000s decade and the top Radio Artist of the decade.[24] In February 2010, the RIAA listed her as the top certified artist of the decade.[25][26]
