Ziya Öniş is Professor of International Relations and the Director of the Center for Research on Globalization and Democratic Governance (GLODEM ) at Koç University in Istanbul, Turkey. Until recently he was the Director of the Graduate School of Social Sciences and Humanities at Koç University. He was previously a Professor of Economics and an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Boğaziçi University, Istanbul. He is one of Turkey’s leading political economists. He has written extensively on various aspects of Turkish political economy. His most recent research focuses on the political economy of globalization, crises and post-crises transformations, Turkey’s Europeanization and democratization experience and the analysis of new directions in Turkish foreign policy.

He received his BA and MA degrees from London School of Economics, Department of Economics. He received his PhD. from University of Manchester on Development Economics. He worked with Professor Colin Kirkpatrick and Professor Frederick Nixson at Manchester. Prof. Onis took active part in different OECD and Word Bank projects as consultant and prepared reports and working papers. He is one of the most cited social scientists in Turkey and a world-wide known Turkish political economist. Number of citations to the works of Prof. Öniş in the Social Science Citation Index is around five hundred as of September 2010.

He is the member of Middle East Studies Association, International Studies Association, American Political Science Association, European Community Studies Association, Association for Evolutionary Economics, Turkish Political Science Association, Middle East Economic Association, European Consortium for Political Research, Turkish Economics Association.

The patterns and paradoxes of democratization and democratic politics in emerging societies. Entrepreneurs and democracy. Political economy and identity politics. Islamism and democracy. International context of democratization, human rights issues and the relationship between Europe and its periphery with a specific focus on Turkey-Greek-EU relations. Globalization, the nation state and financial crises in the semi-periphery. Transformation of the state and the politics of regulatory reform. The political economy of Turkey from a comparative perspective: the interplay of domestic politics and global norms. The potential and limits of regional power influence in the new world order with special reference to Turkey’s relations with Russia, the Central Asian Republics and the Middle East.
