George Whiting Flagg June 26 1816 New Haven, Connecticut - 1897 was an American painter of historical scenes and genre pictures. He was the brother of the artist Jared Bradley Flagg. Both brothers studied painting under their uncle, Washington Allston.
Flagg was financed by his patron, the merchant Luman Reed to the extent that Flagg was able to undertake an extensive tour of Europe. Flagg's early painting Lady Jane Grey Preparing for Execution was to make him famous; his fame however quickly waned as historical painting became progressively less fashionable. In later life he studied theology and entered the ministry, but eventually returned to painting, mainly portraiture, in his declining years.
