The theme for Unmaad Jan '09 was ''Spirit of India''. It was inspired by the resilience of the spirit of India after the 26/11 terrorist attack. This Unmaad was about India, about Indians, what makes us Indian, what makes us proud residents of the nation that unites us, the culture that binds us. It celebrated the Indian childhood in the fairs, its culture in the competitions and workshops and the new India in the rock contest.

The cultural festival, which was held from 2-4 October saw many events culminating into a breathless crescendo of incredible performances and incessant cheering from the audience for the stage shows. Finally, when the dust had settled, Unmaad 2009 had surpassed all previous versions with an estimated footfall of over 30,000.

Unmaad 2009 has already seen great participation from corporate and colleges across the country, in the online quizzes and treasure hunt. Several outstation participants were joined by many thousands from across Bangalore to participate in events across the literary, music and arts genres. For those taking a short break from participating, or those just out to enjoy their weekend, the festival also had a bevy of workshops (including pottery and martial arts!). The dance workshop, conducted by instructors from the Shiamak Davar institute of performing arts, was completely booked within a day of it being announced.[4] The three hour session had over 30 couples dance and jive to salsa. The food courts catered to every taste bud, with US Pizza, Little Italy, Baskin Robbins and Kaati Zone feeding the hungry and tired contestants.

The events all had a global theme – with ‘The World is Bangalore’ being the theme of Unmaad this year. While the Tattoo Contest had an ‘Oriental’ theme, the Collage asked contestants to interpret how ‘the world just shrunk’. All over the fest, the Globetrotter mascot (in his various avatars) encouraged people to do better than ever. Also on the side were a few stalls created by enterprising first-years at IIM Bangalore. Created as a contest of their own, the students were challenged to generate revenue by conducting minor games to entertain people. While the students got entrepreneurial, they used their marketing knowledge to attract as many customers as possible, while making sure all their ‘Double-or-nothing’ games created a steady profit.[5]

The B-School of Rock competition, with the prize up for grabs being a deal with the recording studio of Kishan Balaji of the Bhairvi trust and a direct entry to next year’s June Rock Out, had 6 of the best bands in India do their best to outperform the rest. Judged by Lounge Piranha, and witnessed by a packed audience at the Open Air Theatre, the honours went to Chennai-based ‘Public Issue.’[6]

The highlight of the festival was undoubtedly the pro-night performance, with the entire campus moving to the football ground for the Shankar Ehsaan Loy performance. A steady influx of people soon had the crowds swelling to 4000, swaying (or jumping) to the music of ‘Wake Up Sid’ and ‘Rock On!’.[7]

The theme for Unmaad Jan '09 was Spirit of India.

The professional show by Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as K.K. was a huge crowd puller. Through his mesmerising voice, he unveiled a plethora of emotions which come out as suffering in "Tadap Tadap ke", passion in "Bardaasht", ecstasy in "Oh Humdum", pride in "Koi kahe kehta rahe", love in "Aankhon mein teri", hope in "Pal" and nostalgia in "Yaaron".
