The goal of this Wikipedia Version 1.0 Editorial Team is to collaborate essentially to identify a set of articles that would be suitable for release in print, CD and DVD. This may involve improving or maintaining selected articles. Our work will not affect the existing wiki process for creating and editing articles.

You're encouraged to help with the articles or to discuss the project on the talk page.

Strategies for identifying quality articles

A variety of approaches have been suggested in the talk pages, and these are summarised below. There are four main ideas, which are in fact complementary - the project will progress best if work is done on all four of them.

  1. Core topics: Small foundation based on core topics, build from there.
  2. WikiSort: Integrate the sifting process into the Wiki.
  3. Featured articles first: Small foundation based on known quality articles.
  4. Work via Wikiprojects: Use "networking" to mobilise our existing subject specialists.

Summary of proposals for compiling a set of quality articles
Name Summary of overall strategy Proposed by Proposed size Strengths Objections Variations
CORE TOPICS 1. Define a list of core topics, identify articles.
2. Use a Collaboration of the Week approach to bring articles up to standard, working through till complete
3. Once complete, move one level deeper into each subject, define new topics
Maurreen 100-1000 Good selection & balance of articles
Slow progress, hard work, limited size Choice of list-

WIKISORT 1. Work out details of proposal.
2. Request/implement software changes.
3. Users rate articles.
4. MediaWiki software automagically selects articles for each release.

Requires major tech. changes; most are already implemented Fully customizable
FEATURED ARTICLES FIRST 1. Use our existing collection of high quality articles (FAs 2005 on)
2. Bring our older FAs up to standard.
3. Quick & easy publication establishes the idea of CD/print Wikipedia
Maurreen et al. 500-1000 Known list, quick & easy to do Limited, hard to organise by subject, & set of articles is very random, limited size. Wikireader version of selected FAs
WORK VIA WIKIPROJECTS 1. Contact all Wikiprojects individually, ask them to identify all quality articles in their area.
2. Suggest (don't require!) use of the WP:Chem assessment system.
3. Compile a list of all articles, identify missing key topics.
4. Work to fill in these missing topics.
Martin Walker 5000-20000 Work done by hundreds, not just a few.
Validation done by subject experts.
