The Amazing Race Asia 4 is the fourth installment of the reality television game show The Amazing Race Asia. The Amazing Race Asia 4 features several teams of two, each with a pre-existing relationship, in a race around the world.[1] Production for this installment was delayed in 2009.

Applications ended March 31, 2010, after a short extension due to popular demand. Semi-finalist and finalist interviews were held between March/April. Filming took place June to July 2010.[2]

The season premiered on September 23, 2010. The identities of the contestants were revealed on September 2, 2010.[3] The premiere episode of the season can now be watched on AXN's website on September 16, 2010.

Production

Development and filming

According to AXN, this season is dubbed as "ride of a lifetime". Allan noted that this season will travel to exotic locations and feature new challenges. This season features a first-time visit to Sri Lanka, as well as visits to far-flung areas including Invercargill, New Zealand, and Legazpi City, Albay, Philippines.

Leg 5 was said to be the most expensive production to date.[4] It features teams riding numerous forms of transportations: airplanes, bus, passenger jeep, carrier jeep, jet ski and an all-terrain vehicle.

Leg 7 was a double-length leg, which has been featured since the first season of the show. Similar to the fourteenth season of the US version, the leg midpoint was explicitly mentioned as a pit stop, dubbing it as a virtual pitstop, with the exception that there was no mention of an elimination at the pit stop. Instead, the clue stated "meet Allan Wu".

Cast

Season 4's cast include the show's first father-daughter team, as well as martial arts experts, tattooists, social workers and musicians. Like in previous Asian editions, this season features a large number of media personalities or their relatives. Wendy was a finalist in Miss Hong Kong 2006, Nadine was Miss Indonesia Earth 2009, while Natasha was Miss South Jakarta 2007. Dimple is a Hindi soap actress who starred in the serial Aathvaan Vachan while her friend Sunaina is an Indian TV actress, who is currently starring in Dill Mill Gayye, as well as a movie actress who starred in Hindi movie Kyun! Ho Gaya Na.... Manas finished runner-up as a contestant on the Indian reality-dating show Rakhi Ka Swayamwar, similar in format to The Bachelorette of the American series. Jess and Lani have appeared in numerous media and print advertisements and commercials in the Philippines. Michelle was a reality TV contestant on the Singaporean series S Factor. At the ages of 21 and 22 respectively, Claire and Michelle also form the youngest team in Amazing Race Asia history.

This season features one non-Asian, Ivan, who is from Hungary and races with his Malaysian wife Hilda; Jess & Lani are of Australian nationality but of Filipino ethnicity, while Richard (Hardin) & Richard (Herrera) were raised in United States.[5]

Filipina socialite and fashion icon Tessa Prieto-Valdez appeared as the greeter on the fifth leg at the Bahi Beach Amphitheater.

Marketing

The Amazing Race Asia 4 has three official sponsors, they are Axiata, Caltex and Sony. The official hotel partner is Hilton, while the series is supported by Tourism Malaysia and Mix FM.[6]

A week before the premiere of Racers Revealed, the show was released on its official website. The first episode premiered on the official website one week before the season debut as well.

  • A red team placement indicates that the team was eliminated.
  • An underlined blue team placement indcates that the team came in last on a non-elimination leg of the race and was "Marked for Elimination"; if the team did not finish 1st on the next leg, they would receive a 30-minute penalty.
  • A green ƒ and team placement indicates that the team won a Fast Forward clue.
  • Matching colored symbols (orange +, teal ^, magenta –, and olive ~) indicate teams who worked together during part of the leg as a result of the Intersection route marker.
  • A yellow > indicates that the team who chose to use the Yield; < indicates the team who received it.
  • A brown » indicates that the team chose to use a U-Turn; « indicates the team who received it.

^1 Alan & Wendy (who initially arrived 1st), Claire & Michelle (4th), Yani & Nadine (7th), Jess & Lani (8th), and Hussein & Natasha (9th) received a four-hour penalty because Alan, Claire, Yani, Jess, and Natasha, respectively failed to complete the Roadblock on time. They fell to 6th through 10th places respectively (After Ethan & Khaire checked-in (5th) with no penalty). However, as Yani & Nadine were further given a 30-minute penalty for being "marked for elimination" (not checking in 1st), this pushes Jess & Lani up to 8th place, with Hussein & Natasha checked in as 9th place and Yani & Nadine falling to last place, which results them in elimination.
^2 Sahil & Manas initially arrived 7th but they did not pay their tuk-tuk fare correctly. They had to settle their taxi fare before they checked in. In doing so, Jess & Lani were checked in at 7th, while Sahil & Manas dropped to 8th.
^3 Alan & Wendy were been "marked for elimination." However, since they checked-in last, they were eliminated without being issued the 30-minute penalty.
^4 Leg 7 was double-length with two Detours and two Roadblocks shown over two episodes.
^5 Hussein & Natasha elected to take a 4-hour penalty at the location of the 1st Roadblock after Hussein chosed to quit the 1st roadblock task at leg 7.
^6 Dimple & Sunaina were fallen so much behind from the other teams since the start of the 2nd half of leg 7. Instead of completing the second detour at Leg 7, they were then checked in to the pit stop immediately, where there were eliminated.
^7 Richard & Richard rode a private car from the beach to Kura Meru. They had to go back to the beach, touch the boat from which they got their clue, before going back to Pura Meru to be able to proceed.

Sutera Harbour Marina is where the roadblock took place in this leg.

Leg 2 (Malaysia)

The Roadblock required one team member to get a ring out of a rope maze while being submerged underwater. If the team member did not finish the puzzle on time, the team would incur a four-hour penalty for not completing the Roadblock (Which Accessed at the pit-stop). In this leg's Detour, teams chose between Rapid Water or Rapid Fire. In Rapid Water, teams had to sail a bamboo raft down river rapids and cross the river to retrieve their next clue. Additional tasks

  • At the Night Market, teams must eat at least a hundred chicken balls to receive their next clue. The team that ate the most number of chicken balls would have a 20-minute advantage in the next activity, the Roadblock (The Penalty time for not completing the roadblock is reduced to 3hour and 40 minutes, which Michelle & Claire had won).

Leg 3 (Malaysia → Sri Lanka)

Independence Square in Colombo was the third pit stop of the race.

In the first Fast Forward of the race, a team had to proceed to the Galle Bus Station and have their heads shaved at a nearby street barber. This Fast Forward is similar to the Fast Forwards from Leg 9 of Season 5 and Leg 8 of Season 7 of the American edition. In this leg's Roadblock, one team member has to know the year when Sri Lanka became a sovereign state and changed its name from Ceylon to its present name. In Beyond, teams had to search a local cemetery for the tomb of Fang Sam Moy.
