Darren Billy, Jr. (born January 23, 1985), better known as Lab Ox (Template:Pron-en), is an American Hip-Hop, R&B, and Pop producer from Houston, Texas, by way of New Orleans, Louisiana. He has produced for artists and groups such as 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, G-Unit, Drake, and more. He is currently signed to Jay-Z's record label Roc Nation.
Early Life and Career
Born in New Orleans, Lab Ox moved to Houston at the age of 4. His parents first introduced him to a Casio keyboard at the age of 6, and since, he has taught himself how to play several instruments, including the trumpet, guitar, and piano.
He got his first start in the record business with 50 Cent as one of the featured producers on G-Unit artist Young Hot Rod's demo project[1]. In 2006, he landed a production deal with G-Unit Records, which later led to him producing a diss record 50 Cent released on August 17, 2007, aimed at Lil Wayne entitled "Part Time Lover" [2]. The record would later be featured on the mix-tape "Sabrina's Baby Boy", the last in the "G-Unit Radio" mix-tape series[3].
Lab Ox eventually caught the attention of Jay-Z in early 2009 through an encounter initiated by his long time production and writing partner and fellow label-mate J Angel at the infamous South by Southwest held annually in Austin,Texas. The meeting was held with Roc Nation executive Jay Brown, and upon hearing the music was immediately impressed, signing both [4] Lab Ox and J Angel to the Roc Nation imprint.
In recent years, he has caught the attention of artists and fans alike, and his current projects include 50 Cent’s “50 Cent: Blood on the Sand”[5], "Then Days Went By" featured on "Before I Self Destruct[6]” and Lloyd Banks ft. Governor "Kill It" featured on Lloyd Banks album The Hunger For More 2[7] as an iTunes bonus track.
Lab Ox has always used the software based production workstation FL Studio and has also incorporated Cubase. He has been influenced and inspired by producers such as Timbaland, The Neptunes, Dr. Dre, Kanye West, and The Underdogs. He works aside his long time partner and fellow Roc Nation label mate J Angel, and is one half of the up and coming production group The Freshmen with Vikaden.
