dudesnude is a popular social networking website dedicated to gay, bisexual, and men who have sex with men that was launched in 2002[1] and it has over 500,000 members.[2] The website's purpose is to facilitate chat, dating, and setting up sexual encounters known as a "hookup".[3]The company slogan is "picture, video, and profile sharing for men!"[2]
Interface and users
Users select their stats which include, race, age, height, weight, condom usage preference, HIV status, amount of body hair, measurements of muscles, penis size, and other criteria. They also upload pictures of themselves, usually sexy if not pornographic but this is not always the case.[4] The site has been described as the most graphic and audacious of the gay dating sites.[5] Then an entire area is dedicated for users to write whatever they want to about themselves, these blurbs range from a few sentences to full pages. Users then join any of several segregated communities such as those reserved for those that are HIV+ or for those that are visibly muscular.[5][6][7] Users can then choose to allow or disallow other communities from being able to see them or other age groups etc.
Furthermore there is a verification feature used to prove a profile is real. The user is sent a code that they must write on a piece of paper and take a picture with and have it submitted within 10 minutes, if it is not submitted in 10 minutes or does not match the other photos then the user is not verified.[5] The site also has a complex search feature to search for type of pictures or video by various characteristics of the individual such as age, race, hair color, or penis length and type of picture body, butt, sex, penis, chest etc.[5][8][1]
Dudesnude is free for a basic profile, and has been reported as "fun" to carouse through[9], however paid profile allow for more storage space, the ability to contact anyone in any community, and the ability to message those with full inboxes. Dudesnude is owned by ThePlanet.com and is hosted in the United Kingdom.[10]
Twink porn star Tory Mason was discovered off of his dudesnude profile.[11]
Dudesnude makes over $US 163,000 a year in revenues from advertising, memberships, and an online porn viewing section and store.[1][12] The site receives more than 72 million hits a year.[12] The estimated worth of the website is 329,482.99 dollars.[12] According to Alexa rankings the site is the 7,583rd most popular website, making it more popular than competitor and pioneer gay.com and third only to competitor's adam4adam and manhunt.net.[13][12]
Globalization
The website is popular worldwide, which is an oddity as most gay hookup sites are based either in the United States, Europe or Australia but dudesnude is popular throughout.[6] Dudesnude is most popular in the United States followed by South Korea, Canada, Germany and México.[10] The Alexa website rank in South Korea is #431.
In 2007 dudesnude featured in the controversial GenderBender Festival in Italy, being the topic of the audio collage "Into My Eyes".[14]
Public health
Many public health groups targeting STD treatment have criticized or worry about online sex sites such as dudesnude in addition to its counterparts, Manhunt, gay.com, and adam4adam because of the their high incidence of facilitating unprotected sex and therefore the transmission of HIV and other STDs.[15] In fact research in Australia shows that condom usage between partners that meet through dudesnude is low.[6]
Dudesnude has been criticized for allowing members to select condom preference including a "when appropriate" option that has been described inconsistant with safe sex practices.[16]
