Birla Institute of Technology Mesra, (Hindi: बिरला प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान मेसरा ) (popularly known as BIT, Mesra or BIT, Ranchi) is an autonomous engineering and technology-oriented institute located in Ranchi, Jharkhand in India. It is a Deemed University under section 3 of the Universtiy Grants Commission Act, 1956. In addition to Mesra (Ranchi), BIT has extension centres in Lalpur (Ranchi), Allahabad, Kolkata, Noida, Jaipur, Chennai, Patna & Deoghar and overseas extension centres in Bahrain, Muscat (Oman), Ras al-Khaimah (UAE) and Mauritius.

History

The Birla Institute of Technology was established in the year 1955 at Mesra, Ranchi, by the philanthropist - industrialist B. M. Birla. During initial years, the institute was affiliated to Patna University until 1960 and then to Ranchi University. BIT was declared a deemed university in 1986 under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 under notification No. F. 9-2/83-U.3 of August 28, 1986. BIT has many firsts to its credit which have been replicated by other institutes later on. BIT was the very first institute in India to establish a department of space engineering and rocketry, in the year 1964.[1] BIT also introduced the concept of Small Industries Entrepreneurs' Park and became the first institute in the country not just to provide 'nursery sheds' and central designing and workshop facilities to young entrepreneurs, but also to facilitate the initial project funding. In line of the above view, Small Industries Research and Development Organization (SIRDO) was set up in 1970 as a launching pad for small manufacturing enterprises run by technical graduates of BIT. A few companies born from this concept are Meditron, Alcast etc. This idea was appreciated by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and spread to other leading institutes of India such as IITs by the Government as a concept of Science and Technological Entrepreneurs Park (STEP). The first STEP was approved and located in BIT Mesra. The entrepreneurship development cell was founded in the year 2007 by students Amit Chaudhary and Ankit Jain with B.M. Karan as mentor to foster the spirit of entrepreneurship among students.[2][3][4][5] To add financial strength to this effort, BIT has set up SIDBI Center for Innovation and Incubation (SCII) by an arrangement with Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) to provide a limited period of time to new entrepreneurs, start up companies, and technology based organizations, to facilitate Research & Development operations in areas of interest with the faculty of the institute.[6] BIT became the very first technical University in India to establish an Overseas Extension Centre - at Bahrain, in the year 2000. It is one of the few universities in India to be accorded a supercomputer (PARAM 10000[7]) at the core of its ultramodern IT infrastructure.

The Institute along with its extension centres at present has more than 10,000 students enrolled for different Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes. It also has more than 150 registered students for the Ph.D. Programmes.

Administration

BIT functions under the overall supervision, direction and control of a Board of Governors, comprising representatives of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, the U.G.C., the State Government, the Chancellor, the A.I.C.T.E., the Hindustan Charity Trust and the Institute Faculty. Mr. C.K. Birla is the Chairman of the Board of Governors. The Governor of the state of Jharkhand is the Chancellor of the Institute. The Technical Council headed by vice chancellor decides the academic policy of the Institute.

Location

The main campus of the Institute at Mesra is located 16 kilometers from Ranchi in a 780-acre (3.2 km2) setting at the confluence of the rivers Jhumar and Suvarnarekha. The Mesra campus is entirely residential, providing accommodation to over 3200 undergraduate and postgraduate students and about 550 members of faculty and staff. The infrastructure also includes research laboratories, lecture halls, workshops, playground, gymnasium and a central library with over 1,00,000 books, journals and electronic databases.

Central Facilities

Central Computer Aided Design Laboratory (CAD-LAB)

The CAD Laboratory is a central facility of the institute where all users - undergraduate and postgraduate students, research scholars and faculty members - can work with sophisticated design and analysis software. They can learn to use the latest software and carry out their research work.

Central Computing Facilities (CCF)

The Central Computing Facility (CCF) forms an extremely important component of the Institute’s infrastructure, providing a wide spectrum of services to the students as well as faculty and staff involved in research and other academic activities. The maintenance and up keep of the CCF is done by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering; however the CCF is utilized by students and staff from all departments of the Institute. There is also the PARAM 10000 Supercomputer, which was gifted to the Institute by C-DAC, in recognition of the Institute’s commitment towards quality higher education and research. The PARAM supports a large number of projects that require parallel processing and multi processor capabilities.

Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF)

The Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF) of the Institute was established in 2006 under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP), funded by the World Bank and Government of Jharkhand, with an objective to provide sophisticated instrumental facilities for advanced research to faculty

Central Library

The Central Library of the Institute, established in 1955, has a collection of the Central Library comprises hybrid (print & electronic) resources in the fields of science and technology. The collection includes 10130 online journals, 100 print journals, 112470 books, 2503 CDs, 58 audiocassettes and 4079 project reports.

Annual Festivals

BITotsav

A four day festival is organized every year in February. Various teams from BIT and other colleges participate to win prizes during the event. The main attractions are Band-Nite, Dance-Nite, Music-Nite and Core-Nite. This happens during the month of February.

Pantheon

A four day techno-cultural fest organised by the Student's Activity Council of BIT Mesra (which consists of members from all the technical and cultural clubs). Started in the year 2010, Pantheon is held in the monsoon semester and is usually the first event of the year. It contains technical events (organised by the IET Student Chapter and the IEEE Student Chapter) and 3 cultural nights (Music Night, Dance Night and Fugiya Night).

Dhwani

A three day wholly musical fest organized by the music club. (Now held during BITotsav)

Unnayan

Unnayan is a biennial international level technical festival organized by the IEEE Student Chapter at BIT Mesra. Initiated in the year 1997, it has completed a successful decade with International Unnayan 2007.

Drishtant

A national techno-management fest organised biennially by the IET Student Chapter. Started in the year 2005, this outstandingly successful event will be held next in the year 2012.

Zeitgeist

A techno-management extravaganza organised biennially by the IEEE Student Chapter. Zeitgeist has been a platform for creativity and innovation for both participants and organisers alike. It has witnessed the birth of ground-breaking events like Den Katalveno, Cashflow, Ne Plus Ultra, Galazio and others. From 2011, The technical events of Pantheon biannually go by the name 'Zeitgeist'.

TechNIEEK

BIT's biannual monsoon session technical extravaganza, conducted by the IET Student chapter of BIT Mesra. From 2010, The technical events of Pantheon biannually by the name 'TechNIEEK'. Technieek is a team based technical fest in which students form teams and compete in various technical and non-technical events. On the final day, after a points tally, the first 6 teams battle it out in a Core-Night, which determines the winning team of Technieek. Technieek's signature events are Blitzkrieg and The Byte.

Spardha

An annual intra-BIT technical festival organized by the IEEE student chapter, BIT Mesra. Started in 2004, Spardha had grown in magnitude with every subsequent edition. Popular events like The Da Vinci Code and Sensex have been overwhelming hordes of students every 2 years. Though the IEEE student chapter does not hold Spardha any more, it now diverts its attention to making Zeitgeist, and Unnayan bigger and better successes.

ColossIEIum

It was an Annual festival organized by The BIT Students Chapter (CS & ET Division) of The Institution Of Engineers, India. The online events of Pantheon now go under the name 'Colossieium'.

Samaagam

It is an All India Management Festival, organized each year by the Department of Management having participation from nationwide B-schools. The events conducted at Samaagam are of wide variety. Some of the events to name are Business Quiz, Brand Equity, Stock Exchange, Business Bazigaar, Paper presentation.

Technika

It is the annual technical festival of the Patna Campus of the institute. First Started in 2009 TECHNIKA has emerged to be one of the largest technical festival in the region drawing more than 1000 participants from every nook and corner of the nation

Deepotsav

It is a cultural festival which is organized during DIWALI break by LEO CLUB, for the institute students and teachers.

Extension Centers

The BIT extension centres , spread across several major cities within the country as well as overseas, function under the complete academic as well as administrative control of the parent University i.e. BIT, Mesra. Intake process for the extension centres is as stringent as that of the main campus and only the top rankers find admission. The Centres offer a wide range of programmes ranging from undergraduate level to programmes in Computer Applications and Business Management. The students from these centres are placed in visiting organizations through the centralized campus recruitment programme at BIT Mesra as well as at the respective extension centres.

Lalpur Extension Center

The Institute first started a centre for Continuing Education or Technology Centre in 1976 at Lalpur in Ranchi, initially offering only part-time postgraduate M.E. courses for disciplines such as Mechanical, Civil, Electrical and Electronics Engineering. It was primarily aimed for the benefit of officers working in various Ranchi based public sector undertakings and private industries such as, MECON, SAIL, HEC, CIL, CMPDI, Shriram Ball-bearings Limited, Usha Martin Industries Limited, nationalized banks etc., who wished to upgrade their qualifications. Part-time M.E. degree courses were initially offered as evening courses, subsequently the MBA, MCA and DCA courses were also offered. The laboratory classes were conducted on Sundays and holidays at the main Mesra campus. This Centre is now referred to as the BIT Lalpur Extension Centre.

In 1997 the centre started the full time courses, B.Sc. Computer Science and B.Sc. Electronics courses and in 1998 the BCA course for girls only. The success and popularity of these courses led to extra shifts being added in 1999 and the courses being opened for boys also. In 1999, M.Sc. in Information Technology and M.Sc. in Electronics and Telecommunication courses for girls only and BBA course for girls and boys were introduced. Currently the Lalpur Extension Centre has over 1768 students on its rolls with 560 post graduate students.

Jaipur Extension Centre

The Birla Institute of Technology, Extension Centre, Jaipur was started in 1995 in the sprawling campus of the reputed Birla Institute of Scientific Research (BISR). The centre started by offering PG level programmes in computer science and computer applications. Since then the range of programmes as well as the facilities have expanded to offer a wide range of academic programmes both UG & PG level. There is no hostel facility at this institute and therefore one has to be prepared for PG / rented accommodation. Kolkata Extension Centre

The Kolkata Extension Centre was established in 1995. It is located in the southern part of the city and is well connected with the rest of Kolkata. The premises of the Centre includes a computer laboratory with a server room, several lecture rooms, a seminar hall, and a library. Students have free access to online journals through ACM, IEEE and Emerald-online. The whole Centre is networked and internet facilities are provided through a 128 kbit/s leased line. Allahabad Extension Centre

The Extension Centre at Allahabad was established in January 1998. The centre has a well equipped library with a large number of books and technical journals. A digital library for on-line access of books and journals has also been provided for staff and students. Noida Extension Centre

The Extension Centre at Noida was started in 1998 with the BCA course. Since then, the Centre has seen a vast growth in various programmes at all levels. The Centre has a strong core faculty in all related subjects. It has a location advantage to engage guest faculty from industry and other institutions for specialized lectures as Noida is a gateway to a large number of IT companies and other major corporates in the NCR. The Centre now also registers scholars for PhD. programmes in Management and Computer Science. The Noida Extension Centre was the first institute in India to set up a full fledged degree course in B.Sc. in Animation & Multimedia. An International Research Centre on Fourth Generation Mobile Communication System (IRC - 4G) has been set up under EAGER - NetWiC Project of Asia Link Programme by European Commission[46]. Chennai Extension Centre

The Chennai extension centre of Birla Institute of Technology was formerly opened on the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding by the then Vice Chancellor of BIT, Late Dr. S.K. Mukherjee, and the Chairman of AMET, Mr. J. Ramachandran on 2 September 2002. The centre was essentially opened to bring the presence of Birla Institute of Technology in South India. The centre was started with Bachelor of Engineering programme in Marine Engineering and later on expanded to include other courses which were already being conducted at Mesra, Ranchi. The office space for the centre was provided within the precincts of AMET. In early 2004, land was acquired by the center adjacent to the Academy for expanding BIT activities at Chennai. At the present time 1.5 acres (6,100 m2) of land have already been acquired, with plans to extend to 5 acres (20,000 m2) in the near future.

Degrees Offered: B.E. (Marine Engineering), B.Sc. (Nautical Science) and MBA (Shipping & Port Management).

Patna Extension Centre

The Institute's Extension Centre at Patna was established in 2006, on the request of the Government of Bihar. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Institute and the Government of Bihar in December 2005. Subsequently, the Government of Bihar allotted 25 acres (100,000 m2) of land located between the Bihar Veterinary College and the Jai Prakash Narayan International Airport at Patna and also agreed to release the requisite funds for establishing the Centre. The Foundation Stone of the Centre was laid on 24 December 2005 and construction started in April 2006. The Patna Centre is entirely residential, and all students reside in hostels on the campus. Each hostel has a spacious dining hall. The infrastructure includes laboratories, lecture halls, workshops, playgrounds, gymnasium and a library. The plans for the Centre include construction of 5.25 lakhs square feet of academic space, adequate hostel accommodation for 1200 students and residential facilities for staff, dispensary, playground, gym and guesthouse.

The Patna Campus is under the process of being developed as a separate institution with the granting of a deemed university status. The institute,is full-fledged in its own and has developed into a center of excellence in a very short span of time. The technical festival TECHNIKA is one of the largest festival in Bihar and Jharkhand drawing over 1000 participants from every corner of the country. This year it showcased a disaster rescue operation demonstration by 102-BN National Disaster Response Force. Previously such demonstration was held at IIT Bombay.

Deoghar Extension Centre

In 2005, the Government of Jharkhand requested the Birla Institute of Technology to establish an Extension Centre at Deoghar. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Institute and the Government of Jharkhand. As per the provisions of this MoU, 50% of the seats would be filled by students acquiring eligible qualifications from Institutions located in Jharkhand while the remaining 50% would be students from the other states of the country. Subsequently, the Government of Jharkhand allotted 25 acres (100,000 m2) of land located in the villages of Ramchandarpur and Ratanpur at Jasidih, near Deoghar, and agreed to release the requisite funds for establishing the Centre. The academic activities of the Centre commenced in October 2007.The campus is also known as bit deoghar

Other Divisions at Mesra, Ranchi: University Polytechnic

The University Polytechnic was established in 2001, as a joint venture of the Department of Welfare, Government of Jharkhand and BIT, Mesra, to impart Diploma level technical education amongst the youths of Jharkhand. The campus of the University Polytechnic is located close to the National Highway 33 in the vicinity of the BIT Main campus. Spread over a picturesque area of 13 acres (53,000 m2), the location on the outskirts of Ranchi and surrounded by green forests. The University Polytechnic is fully residential with three large hostels, (2 hostels for boys and one for girls), accommodating about 450 students. With twenty full time faculty and an equal number of visiting faculty from BIT Mesra, a library, laboratories, training and placement cell and sports and games facilities.
