Robert J. "Bob" Duffy (born August 21, 1954) is the Democratic mayor of Rochester, New York and lieutenant governor-elect of New York. He was elected the 65th mayor of the city in November 2005 and took office on January 1, 2006. Prior to running for office, Duffy served as the city's police chief from 1998-2005. He was deputy chief from 1992 to 1998. In May 2010, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo selected Duffy as his running mate in the race for Governor.[1]

Background

Duffy was born to Catherine Cuddihy and Cornelius Duffy and raised in Rochester. He graduated from the Aquinas Institute and joined the Rochester Police Department in 1976. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1993 and a Master of Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University in 1998.

Family

Robert Duffy is married to Barbara Duffy; they have two daughters, Erin (23) and Shannon (21).

Campaign for Mayor

Duffy retired as Chief to run in the Democratic Primary for Mayor in 2005. Duffy won the Democratic party primary in September 2005 and the general election in November 2005.

Duffy outspent all other general election opponents by almost 10 to 1, raising over $10,760,000 in his campaign as of the last December filing, including a last-minute pre-primary personal loan of $60,000 to his campaign. His fund raising set a new record for a Rochester Mayoral election.

On March 21, 2009 Mayor Duffy announced that he will be running for re-election.

Administration as Mayor

During the opening months of his administration, Mayor Duffy closed down the fast ferry service across Lake Ontario between Toronto and Rochester, which he sold in April 2007 to a German company for $30 million USD.

He also helped to secure a substantial influx of state aid for Rochester and launched a program to demolish vacant and derelict houses in city neighborhoods. He has also played a major role in a project which will re-develop the Midtown Plaza property in the central business district into a new corporate headquarters for the PaeTec communications firm, and renovate other portions of the plaza.

Duffy has also continued his predecessors' policy of downsizing the overall payroll and cost of city government, while increasing the ranks of those directly involved with providing public safety.

Mayor Duffy has been more recently been put under attack for his efforts to take "mayoral control" over the school district.[2]

Cuomo/Duffy 2010

In May 2010, Duffy was picked by Cuomo to be the lieutenant gubernatorial nominee. They won on November 2, 2010.
