Song |
"Barbra Streisand" is a disco house song by American-Canadian DJ duo Duck Sauce. It was released on 10 September 2010. The song peaked at number one in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Scotland. It became a top ten hit in Australia, Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
Background
The song is named after the singer of the same name, and samples "Gotta Go Home" by German disco group Boney M., which in turn samples "Hallo Bimmelbahn" performed by German band Nighttrain, as written by brothers Heinz and Jürgen Huth.[1] "Barbra Streisand" was first played at the 2010 Miami Winter Music Conference and is getting heavy DJ and radio support in the UK and Ireland, Poland (Polskie Radio 4), Lithuania (Radiocentras) and Australia. In Australia, "Barbra Streisand" was first heard on the radio station Triple J. The song has since also moved to various commercial radio stations and has increased in popularity. It reached number one on the Australian Club Chart as of 12 September 2010, and #1 in US Billboard magazine Dance/Club Play Songs chart on week ending December 18, 2010 published on December 9th.[2]
A video for the song features many prominent and affiliated artists making cameo appearances, such as Kanye West, Pharell Williams, Ryan Leslie, Buckshot, Smif-n-Wessun, DJ Premier, Chromeo, DJ Mehdi, So Me, Diplo, ?uestlove, Ezra Koenig, Santigold, Yelawolf, Fafi and the Fat Jew of Team Facelift.[3]
On 24 October 2010, the Calgary Flames began using "Barbra Streisand" as their new goal song.
The single's album artwork is modeled directly after Barbra Streisand's own 1980 album, Guilty.
Critical reception
Nick Levine of Digital Spy gave the song five out out five stars stating, "[...] 'Barbra Streisand' actually kinda suits the track, a sassy, no-messin' disco-house dazzler which tips its trilby in the direction of Studio 54 circa 1979 - happily enough, just when Babs was enjoying her own dancefloor dalliance with 'The Main Event' / 'Fight' and 'No More Tears'. Lack of lyrics notwithstanding, it's deliriously catchy, endlessly danceable and ultimately so uplifting that it could even cheer you up after watching the denouement of 'The Way We Were'. Well, almost."[4] Jason Lipshutz from Billboard gave the song a positive review describing it as "one of the weirdest, most intoxicating dance anthems in recent memory", and wrote: "The most surprising thing about this collaboration [...] is its richness in sound in between the beat-stopping utterances of Streisand's name. Guitar licks collide with heavy doses of synthesizers as a fist-pumping beat refuses to let up. The busy instrumentation is brilliantly paired with overly simple vocals: An upbeat chorus of "oohs" instantly lodges inside the listener's brain, and "Barbra Streisand" morphs into an inexplicable command to start dancing."[5] Michael Cragg of The Guardian called the song "an insanely catchy slice of disco house".[6]
Chart performance
The song debuted at number 25 in the Netherlands on 16 October 2010. Three weeks later it rose to number one, after having stayed at number two for two weeks.[7] It debuted at number three in the United Kingdom on 17 October 2010, selling 67,000 copies in its first week.[8]
