Tarapacá 1851

The Province of Tarapacá was an old territorial division of Peru, which existed from 1837 until 1883.

  • It was created in 1837, in Department of Litoral.
  • In 1853 the Department of Moquegua, had the provinces of Moquegua, Tacna, Arica and Tarapacá.
  • In 1868, the Province Litoral of Tarapacá, had Iquique as the capital, independent of the Department of Moquegua.
  • In 1878, the Department of Tarapacá, had provinces of Tarapacá and Iquique.

Political division

In 1878, this province was divided into the following districts.

Capital

The capital of this province was the city of Iquique. With the creation of the Department of Tarapacá in 1878, the capital of the province became the city of Tarapacá.

Limits

Limited to the northern province of Arica, on the east and south by Bolivia and the west by the Pacific Ocean.
