The blue area is New York State; the red area is area codes 347 and overlays 718 and 917

Area code 929 is a planned New York City overlay for area codes 718, 347, and 917 in the buroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island, as well as the Marble Hill section of Manhattan. The continuing exhaustion of phone numbers in the area led Neustar, the coordinator of the North American Numbering Plan, to announce[1], and New York State's Public Service Commission to approve, the overlay in January 2010. 929 will be used for both land lines as well as mobile devices.

The fact that it is an overlay meant that telephone lines which previously had a 718 area code maintained their number, while many of the new numbers in the area from that point on were assigned the 347 area code. The addition of 929 to New York City will bring the number of area codes used there to six (212, 646, 718, 917, 347 and 929), and the outer boroughs will be the first location in NANPA to be served by four area codes.
