Jerry Finn co-produced the album and mixed it too (Finn had previously worked with AFI, Green Day and Blink-182). The album picks up where From Here to Infirmary left off. Skiba has always said that the album did not flow well. After being released, Good Mourning received mediocre reviews (however, some say that this album didn't deserve the negative reviews, and recognize it as being an excellent album, if a departure from their previous sound, and arriving at a slightly more pop-punk style), and Skiba began binge-drinking once again. He then began to write for the next album, Crimson, only weeks after Good Mourning's release.
