Magaluf is a major holiday resort on the Spanish island of Majorca, primarily catering for the British and Scandinavian package holiday market. Magaluf is in the municipality of Calvià and is situated within a group of towns, primarily Torrenova and Palma Nova. The main airport of Majorca is approximately Template:Km to mi away from Magaluf.

The resort

The resort comprises three main beaches, popular for their white sand: Majorca Beach, Magaluf Beach and Palma Nova Beach. These beaches are lined with small bars and 'tat' shops backed by hotels. The largest tour companies include Thomas Cook and Thomson. The resort caters for both young parties as well as families, with peak season during July and August. The winter season (November through March) sees the population of Magaluf dive to 4.355^[1] local residents, with most, if not all, resort and package-based hotels closing their doors. Neighbouring Palma Nova is more popular with families. This resort is wellknown for its 18-30's holidays.

In the 1980s, the family reputation of the resort was spoilt by a growing problem of lager louts,^[2] binge drinking and violence, however in the 1990s the town was cleaned up and made more family friendly.

2009 was a very difficult year for the resort with numbers being badly effected by the recession. In 2010 Ibiza Rocks opened a sister hotel to the Ibiza Rocks Hotel, called the Mallorca Rocks Hotel^[3] in the resort and started promoting live concerts there. UK band The Kooks opened the hotel in June 2010 and the venture appears to have been successful as the promoters have announced they are running weekly live concerts next year for 17 weeks.

Night-life

There are many bars and nightclubs in Magaluf and many well-known DJs have played at the resort including DJ Sammy, Freemasons, Greg James, Judge Jules, Tiesto, Pat Sharp and Tim Westwood. Night-life in Magaluf is centred around the Punta Ballena strip, where most of the night clubs and bars are. BCM is the largest nightclub on the island and is located on the Avenida S'Olivera. The club comprises three floors, the lower of which (millennium) regularly puts on foam, popcorn and water parties. The club claims to feature "the world's largest foam machine".

Mallorca Rocks is a weekly live music night taking place every Tuesday during the summer season at the Mallorca Rocks Hotel. The event has a capacity of 4,000 people and last years guests included The Kooks, Calvin Harris, Tinie Tempah and Dizzee Rascal.

Next to BCM is BCM Square, with a number of bars including BCM Sports Café, Coyote Ugly and Baywatch nudebar. There are many smaller bars and clubs in Magaluf, including the Mambo's Terras Beach Club, Poco Loco, Britannia Bar, Goodfellows, Robin Hoods and Benny Hills.

Attractions

Besides bars and nightclubs, there are two water parks, a Sling Shot, go kart racing, horseback riding and various water sports including SCUBA, Jet skiing and wind surfing. A number of hotels have more family friendly dinner shows and cabarets.

A popular challenge for tourists is a swim to Black Lizard Island (Isla de sa Porrassa) located in the centre of Magaluf Bay. The island is known by this name due to the very high number of black lizards that can be found scurrying away during one's climb. The island is situated right in the centre of Magaluf bay and is approximately 400m away from the beach front.
