Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance (キングダム ハーツ 3D [ドリーム ドロップ ディスタンス], Kingudamu Hātsu Surī Dī [Dorīmu Doroppu Disutansu]),[3] is an upcoming game developed and published by Square Enix exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS, revealed at E3 2010.[4] It is being created by the same development team that worked on Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep,[5] currently part of Square Enix's 1st Production Department.[1] The game will be an entirely new chapter and the seventh installment in the Kingdom Hearts series.[6]

Gameplay

The gameplay from Dream Drop Distance is meant to be similar to Final Fantasy Versus XIII, with one of the new features being pole swinging. The two playable characters are Sora and Riku who would be constantly switched to each other across the game. A new gauge called "Drop Gauge" was featured in the game's first trailer, which Nomura stated would be easier to understand when playing it.[7]

Plot

Setting

Dream Drop Distance is the next major installment in the franchise after Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep.[8] It has been confirmed that all the featured Disney worlds will be brand new to the series, although some previously seen original worlds such as Traverse Town will appear. A trailer released at a Square Enix press conference on January 18, 2011 revealed that one of the new Disney worlds will be based on The Hunchback of Notre Dame.[9] Despite Sora and Riku being shown in their original Kingdom Hearts attires, the game is set after Kingdom Hearts coded. Nomura has stated that they will be depicted this way for a specific reason, but they will likely be shown in their Kingdom Hearts II attire at the story's beginning. The game's story will also be connected to Kingdom Hearts III, which is still under development.[10]

Characters

The game features Sora and Riku (seen in the trailer in the first game's attires) as the two main characters of the game, and is set after the events of Kingdom Hearts coded when Yen Sid asks Mickey to bring the two to him to put them through the Mark of Mastery and make them into true Keyblade Masters in response to Xehanort's return.[11] Xehanort's splintered selves "Ansem" and Xemnas also appear in the game's trailer, facing Riku and Sora respectively.

Development

The game was announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010 as "Kingdom Hearts 3D" for the Nintendo 3DS, where it appeared as a playable demo.[8] It was formally unveiled though at the Square Enix 1st Production Department Premier event at the Toho Cinemas in Tokyo, Japan on January 18, 2011 with its first trailer along with its official name.[3] Tetsuya Nomura, the creator of the series, has also emphasized the mystery element of the story, vaguely stating that the game will "tear down past elements" and that players should expect the unexpected. He has confirmed that the theme of the game is trust.[8]
