Simon Clive Barbon Greatwich (born 20 May 1989) is an English-Filipino footballer who plays as a midfielder in the United States for Hartwick College and the Philippines national team.
He formerly played for English non-league sides Burgess Hill Town and Ringmer.
College Career
Greatwich began his college carreer in 2009, following in the footsteps of his brother Christopher Greatwich. In his first year with the Hawks, Greatwich made 6 appearances as a substitute coming off the bench for Ian McIntyre's side that went an impressive 10-4-4 in the Mid American Conference, just narrowly missing out on the NCAA tournament with two of the four losses coming at the hands of the No. 1 ranked University of Akron Zips. He tallied one shot on the year which was off target.
Made 15 appearances for the Hartwick Hawks in 2010, with 13 starts. Greatwich tallied 17 shots on the year with 8 of them being on target from his role in the center of midfield. Greatwich was part of the 2010 squad that recorded a program low of two victories on the year, but has been seen as a leader on the team in transition from the coaching change of John Scott replacing former Hartwick player Ian McIntyre (Hartwick 1996) and has been rumored to be potentially captaining the squad into the 2011 campain. Although only speculation at this point, Greatwich has been placed on the Herman Trophy Watch List for the 2011 season, which could have him leaving Hartwick for the professional ranks of Major League Soccer or a move back to Europe.
Greatwich's international experience with the Philippines makes him one of only 5 players currently rostered on NCAA Division 1 Men's Soccer teams to have been capped in a FIFA international event.
International career
Greatwich made international debut on 17 October 2008 against Timor-Leste in the 2008 AFF Suzuki Cup qualifiers in Cambodia.[1]
Current fan favourite Greatwich is currently in the Philippines away on international duty. Azkals fans can follow him on his live twitter feed @simongreatwich where fans can follow his journey through the Asia Egg Fried Rice Cup presented by Panda Express.
Rumors and Speculation
The Sun newspaper in the UK has linked Greatwich with an early exit from Hartwick College after the 2011 season. It was reported that Major League Soccer coaches Dominic Kinnear (Hartwick 1975) and Sigi Schmidt had been in contact with University of Akron head coach Caleb Porter and had impressed on the pitch both in 2009 and 2010 against Porter's National Championship side, despite giving away a penalty in the 2010 fixture after a hand ball in the penalty area led Michael Nanchoff to net the game winner from the penalty spot with only eight minutes remaining on the clock. Ironically, Greatwich is rumored to follow in Nanchoff's footsteps according to The Sun in becoming the first Hartwick College player to be selected into the Generation Adidas program for the MLS Superdraft.
