Wael Ghonim (Template:Lang-ar, IPA: [ˈwæːʔel ɣoˈneːm]) (born December 23, 1980 in Cairo, Egypt) is an Egyptian blogger, computer engineer and the Head of Marketing of Google Middle East and North Africa since January 2010.[2] He has been missing since January 27, 2011 during the 2011 Egyptian protests.[3][4]

Early life

Wael Ghonim was born to a middle-class family on December 23, 1980 in Cairo, Egypt and grew up in the United Arab Emirates.[5]

Education

He earned a B.S. in Computer Engineering from Cairo University in 2004 and an M.B.A. with honors in Marketing and Finance from the American University in Cairo in 2007.[6]

Disappearance

He disappeared on January 27, 2011 during the 2011 Egyptian protests. His family told Arabic and international media that he was missing. Google also issued a statement confirming the disappearance. Many bloggers like Habib Haddad campaigned in attempt to identify his location. On February 05, 2011, Mostafa Alnagar, a major Egyptian opposition figure, said that Wael Ghonim is alive and detained by the authorities and will be released within hours.[14] On February 06, 2011, Amnesty International demanded the Egyptian authorities to disclose where Ghonim is and to release him.[15]
