Song |
"Rock That Body" is a song performed by American hip-hop group The Black Eyed Peas taken from their multi-platinum selling fifth studio album The E.N.D. The song serves as the fourth international single from the album , and fifth and final in the United States, and was first serviced to Canadian radio on December 15, then to Australia on January 29 and was released on March 15 in the UK. The song was officially sent to U.S. radio stations on May 11, 2010.[1] The song peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the 5th Top 10 hit off the album. The line "I wanna rock right now", which is repeated several times in the song, is sampled from Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock's 1988 song "It Takes Two."[2]
Composition
"Rock That Body" is an electrohop song with influences of trance music synthesizers[3] and 1980's dance music.[4] The song makes use of kick drums to synth figures that sound like crow caws to a famous Rob Base sample of "it Takes two".[5] The Black Eyed Peas use auto-tune throughout the song, most notably by Fergie.[6] The song is most known to critics as a robotic party track on the album.[7] The song has been compared to be stylistically simiar to Flo-Rida.[8] The song is also compared to Madonna's "Revolver."
Critical reception
Fraser McAlpine of BBC Chart Blog gave "Rock That Body" three out of five stars and called it "a party banger".[9] "Rock That Body" has been well received critically by Mike Schiller of PopMatters.[10] Alex Fletcher of Digital Spy gave the song a positive review stating: "It's got plenty of pounding beats, synths that sound like they've been filled with Red Bull and more twisted vocal effects than an mp3 of Akon cutting loose in a vocoder factory. It's pretty simple stuff and it will no doubt grate something rotten on the 36th listen..."[11]
Chart performance
The song has been a success, reaching the top-ten in many countries and top-twenty in a number of others too. On the Billboard Hot 100, the song has, so far, reach #9, making their 5th consecutive top-ten hit.[12] For airplay, it proved to be their lowest-charting single since 2005's Gone Going, released to radio stations in early 2006.
Music video
The video was filmed on January 13, 2010. It, directed by Rich Lee, was shot back to back with the video for "Imma Be", the 4th song on "The E.N.D.[13] The two songs were mashed up into a medley, which is titled "Imma Be Rocking That Body". The medley length is 8:15 and the music video in total is 10:21. It premiered on Vevo and Dipdive on Tuesday, February 16, 2010.[14][15] The videos were separated for music channels with the introduction and conclusion removed. The video is described as a futuristic Wizard of Oz.[16] It is the sequel for the "Imma Be" video. It begins with The Black Eyed Peas and their good robot arriving at a city, the people in the city are stuck on a loop. The 4 members of the group shoot them with their stereo-guns to end their loop so they could continue dancing. As things are going well, the bad robot appears and kidnaps Fergie, will.i.am chases after it with his own robot. After many failed attempts, will.i.am manages to shoot the bad robot, which starts dancing with the good robot. The video ends as the bad robot runs out of energy and faints.
