Freezing (フリージング, Furījingu) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Korean manwha creators Dall-Young Lim and Kwang-Hyun Kim respectively.[1] The manga started serialization in Kill Time Communication's male-oriented Japanese SF/fantasy manga magazine Comic Valkyrie in 2007.[2]

On August 12, 2010, an anime adaptation by A.C.G.T was announced[3] and began airing in Japan on January 8, 2011.

Plot

Set in a slightly futuristic world, Earth has been invaded and is at war with aliens from another dimension called the Nova. In order to counter them, Pandoras and Limiters, genetically modified girls with super fighting skills and their male partners who use special "freezing" powers to limit their opponent's mobility, are made to fight against the Nova. The series focuses on Kazuya Aoi, a Limiter whose late sister was a Pandora, and Satellizer el Bridget, a powerful Pandora with a cold personality, both who are enrolled at the West Genetics Academy, one of the many academies where Pandoras and Limiters are trained. In spite of the warnings of all his friends about Satellizer, who has intense aphephobia, Kazuya decides to be her friend and Limiter. The story follows Kazuya's friendship with Satellizer, the students of the Academy and Earth's war against the Nova.

Characters

Main characters

Kazuya Aoi (アオイ カズヤ, Aoi Kazuya)
Voiced by: Mitsuhiro Ichiki
The main protagonist and a Japanese Limiter who enrolls at West Genetics. His older sister, Kazuha Aoi, was a Pandora who sacrificed her life to defeat a powerful Nova that invaded Japan in the past. Unlike the other students who fear Satellizer, Kazuya knows that she is being misunderstood and is kind to her. He also empathizes with her as she resembles his late sister and later decides to become her Limiter. Despite being male, 30% of his body is composed of Stigma tissue, enabling him to use Freezing without unifying his senses with a Pandora's.[volume & issue needed] Freezing normally can only be done after the pair has performed a ceremony called a "baptism". In addition, his Freezing can be omnidirectional, an ability that was thought to be limited to Novas, and can also break the Freezing of multiple Limiters.[volume & issue needed] This makes him a perfect partner for Satellizer since she refuses to be baptized with a Limiter.
Satellizer el Bridget (サテライザー エル ブリジット, Sateraizā Eru Burijitto)
Voiced by: Mamiko Noto
The main heroine and one of the strongest Pandoras in the Academy. She was formerly ranked the number one second-year Pandora before being demoted to the 2nd rank due to Kazuya's interference during a tournament. Known as the "Untouchable Queen" (接触禁止の女王) for her intense aphephobia, she is feared by the students for her cold and ruthless personality.
Hailing from the United Kingdom, she is a member of the noble el Bridget family despite being the child of the Head of the family, Howard el Bridget and his mistress, Noelle Allouache. Because of this, she and her mother was hated by her father's wife, Olivia, who later encouraged her son, her younger half-brother, Louis, to mistreat her. However, Louis' mistreatment later turns into sexual abuse and Satellizer was forced to endure it as her mother was sick and didn't want their family situation to worsen. But the abuse ended after her older half-sister, Violet, learns about it and moved her away for her own safety. Upon returning to attend her mother's deathbed, her mother apologizes for what she had gone through and tells her to never lose and to become stronger than anyone.[4] Her mother's words become her driving force in life, resulting in her severe determination and will. Due to the abuse she suffered, she hates being touched and goes berserk if anyone touches her. Surprisingly, Kazuya is the only exception when he touches her. Originally she doesn't want anything to do with Kazuya but she eventually is won over by his kindness and accepts him as her Limiter. Later on, she insists on Kazuya to call her "Satella", though he still uses the senpai honorific. Despite her fearsome reputation and ruthlessness in battle, she has a quiet and reserved nature, collecting stuffed animals as well as knitting. After facing her past demons, she finally loses her aphephobia and no longer reacts when other people touch her. She has a penchant for eating fast food, with Burger Queen being her favorite.
Despite her low synchronization rate with Stigmata, she was implanted with six of Kazuha's Stigmata before her enrollment into Genetics due to her family's influence.[volume & issue needed] She tends to remove her glasses before a fight despite having myopia since activation of the Volt Texture optimizes the senses including eyesight. Her Volt Weapon, "Nova Blood" (ノヴァ・ブラッド, Nova Buraddo), is a giant-handled blade.
Rina Linchen (ラナ リンチェン, Rana Rinchen)
Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa
A Pandora and new transfer student from Tibet. Kind yet naive and easy to fool, she is not very wise, especially about city life. She was sent to West Genetics to learn more about her Pandora abilities and to find "her soulmate" (a Limiter). She believes Kazuya is her soulmate but learns his partner is Satellizer. However, the third-years uses her naivety to trick her to fight against Satellizer under the belief that Satellizer was only using Kazuya for his powers.[5] But when she learns she was tricked, she joins forces with Satellizer to fight against the third-years. Despite accepting Kazuya's choice of partner, she still hopes to convince him to become her Limiter and maintains a rivalry with Satellizer. Lana has six Stigmata (referred to in her homeland as the Tears of Kunlun (クンルンの涙)), where unlike most Pandoras, she was born with her Stigmata rather than it being surgically inserted,[6] and specializes in hand-to-hand combat with her Volt weapon Shinen (四念, "Four Senses"), a pair of steel-plated gloves and boots. She frequently ends her sentences with de arimasu (〜であります).

In the anime, Miyabi was about to be speared by Satellizer's Volt Weapon but was spared after Kazuya used his Freezing to stop Satellizer then pleaded with the latter to stop. Kazuha was special as much of her body was composed of Stigma tissue, which allowed 20 Stigmata to be inserted into her body, but she was consumed by them and was in the process of turning into a Nova herself.[volume & issue needed] Because of this, the higher ups started limiting the number of Stigmata a Pandora can have. Six of her Stigmata have been inherited by Satellizer, six by Lana, three by Cassie, two by Charles, two by Julia, and one by Roxanne.

Terminology

Pandora (パンドラ)
Genetically-engineered girls with incredible speed and strength. They are capable of materializing their own unique weapons called Volt Weapons (ボルトウェポン, Boruto Wepon). Higher-ranking Pandoras can assume a powered-up form called Pandora Mode (パンドラモード, Pandora Mōdo). In the manga, Pandora Mode takes form of a Powered armored suit while in the anime, the Pandora have physical changes (silvery-white hair, yellow eyes, and blue rings around their wrists and ankles). Despite the differences, in both versions, Pandoras in Pandora Mode gain increased strength and power as well as the ability to move in the opponents' freezing grid without aid from a Limiter. Also in the anime, it has been stated that Pandoras are forbidden to use Pandora Mode other than in actual combat with a Nova.
Limiter (リミッター, Rimittā)
The male partners of Pandoras who have the power to freeze their opponents and preventing their partners to be freezed too. It is said that the synchronization between Limiters and Pandoras is easier when the Limiter is younger.
Ereinbar Set (イレインバーセット, Ireinbā Setto)
When a Pandora and Limiter synchronize their brain waves to allow the Limiter to use his Freezing abilities and ultimately, increase their fighting strength. This can only be achieved if the pair performs a baptism.
Baptism (洗礼)
A ceremony in which a Pandora officially acknowledges a Limiter as her partner, giving him her Stigmata.
Carnival (カーニバル, Kānibaru)
A monitored all-out battle royal event to determine top-ranking Pandoras. Any battles conducted after the Carnival is done does not change a Pandora's rank.
Nova (異次元体ノヴァ)
Inter-dimensional aliens that are invading Earth. Usually they have attacked Earth in intervals of around eight years, but the most recent attacks have been more frequent.
Stigma (聖痕, Seikon)
A special tissue created by reverse-engineering from the Novas that gives powers to Pandoras and Limiters alike.[volume & issue needed] Usually these tissues are implanted into the user's back, but some individuals, like the Aoi siblings, possess a high quantity of Stigma tissue inside their bodies too, giving them special abilities. Due to the fact that Stigmata came from the Nova, there is a chance it can take over it's user and turn them into a Nova-human hybrid called Nova Form (ノヴァフォーム, Nova Fōmu).[volume & issue needed]
