Revision as of 07:31, 18 February 2011

When placing mottos, please include them in the top of the In Review section instead of the bottom. Thank you.

Note: If you are adding nominations for specific dates, holidays or other special reasons please add to the Specials section and NOT HERE. Also, please check the archives in case the motto has been submitted and subsequently approved before. If this is the case try to think up another motto instead. Please check Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations. Otherwise feel free to add your suggestion below.

[[User:4|→]A vandal without an editor is like a goldfish without a bicycle. An editor without a vandal is like a neck without a pain.

(A quote from my friend)

Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man stupid and blind in the eyes.

All around the mulberry bush, the monkey chased the weasel.

I was comparing the concept of a monkey chasing a weasel, to a satyr chasing a nymph, when I thought, "How about that rhyme? There are things in Wikipedia it could tie in well with!" So, here it is. I was torn between "mulberry bush" linking to Wikipedia or Main Page, but went with the latter, in case linking to articles is a preferred-not. It seems fitting: doing something detrimental for revenge just comes back to hurt yourself.Yaksar (let's chat) 19:02, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Try to look at the bigger picture, not just how something's being viewed right now. Also considering having it link to WP:UNDUE.--Yaksar (let's chat) 19:02, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hold your horses. I also considered this linking to Wikipedia:NOT#NEWS or Wikipedia:Recentism.--Yaksar (let's chat) 19:02, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Don't put the cart before the horse

I feel this would encourage editors to make sure their sources are reliable before adding them as citations.--Yaksar (let's chat) 19:02, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Another new idea

I'm wondering if anyone could think of a good translation for 忍一時風平浪靜,退一部海闊天空。The best I can think of is 'If you tolerate for a moment, the winds will stop and the waves will be quiet; if you take a step back, the sea will be as wide as the sky.' That doesn't make much sense :) Kayau Voting IS evil 14:57, 5 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Endure temporary calm, take a step backwards?  RichardOwen97  talk  11:44, 6 February, 2011 (UTC)
That's not bad, but the proverb (you know, the parts about the ocean and waves etc) make it a statement rather than an imperative. Kayau Voting IS evil 12:23, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Putting the above through Babelfish, translating from chinese comes up with "Endures to be uneventful for a while, draws back a boundlessness". In Japanese "Patience temporarily wind flat 浪 靜, the retreating/quitting part sea 闊 sky". In Korean "time, department skies". Hope this helps!!!! If music be the food of love, play on; give me excess of it.

I was looking at today's motto, and I suddenly thought of Twelfth Night, by Shakespeare. Remembering that this is part of a famous quote by the character Duke Orsino, I thought of various parts of Wikipedia that might connect to the words. This is my first nomination here, so I don't know if it's been used before or not. Wilhelmina Will (talk) 04:54, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I wanted to find something that would reflect that Wikipedia's overall content and community is constantly growing, but I couldn't find any project pages describing this. Therefore, I decided to fall back on the Statistics page, until someone could suggest a better link. And maybe the Wikipedia link was a little too much excess; I've removed that. :) Thanks! Wilhelmina Will (talk) 22:21, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Can you suggest a better set of links? Wilhelmina Will (talk) 10:27, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - I must agree with the others: I don't like the first few links. (Kind of rough for a first contributor to MOTD, sorry) I've been looking and can't find the links I would like, but something along the lines of "If music (research, reliable sources) be the food of love (knowledge)...." keep the last two links. Anyone know something that could be used for those? PrincessofLlyr royal court 20:00, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How is it now? I've changed the links based on Princess of Llyr's suggestion. Wilhelmina Will (talk) 10:31, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Next time, try to use different edits (more in WP:MOTD/G). If someone opposes your original and doesn't check back, they'd be opposing your new one... Support. Kayau Voting IS evil 11:24, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Almost. The love link still needs to be changed...maybe WP:NOTE? I'm almost support, except for that link. PrincessofLlyr royal court 15:14, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
WP:Reliability redirects to a page about criticisms of Wikipedia. I would think that citing sources do not add to that. I still oppose. The love link should be changed as well. Making an edit in a sub-proposal is what you should do; take a look at others on this page to see what I mean. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 01:24, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

New idea

Again, this is not an april fool's day joke. Could someone translate Gong Zizhen's poem? I think it can link to WP:STICK. Kayau Voting IS evil 15:48, 27 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Babelfish

"The enormous and powerful sorrow of parting is daytime slanting,
recites east the whip to refer to is a horizon.
The coal dust is not heartless,
changes to makes spring the putty to protect the flower.

That makes perfect sense! Simply south...... 18:51, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pretty good for Babelfish (though apparently it didn't see through the synecdoche)! :) I've thought about it, and maybe it will be better only to include the last two lines. My version of the BF translation is below. Kayau Voting IS evil 08:08, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
