Ohio Senate
When incumbent Senator John Boccieri was elected to Congress, Schiavoni was one of thirteen who sought an appointment to replace him.[1][2] In his first term, Schiavoni sat on the Insurance, Commerce & Labor Committee as the Ranking Minority Member. He also served on Energy & Public Utilities, Judiciary Civil Justice, and Judiciary Criminal Justice.
In his bid for a full term, Schiavoni faced primary opposition from Alliance teacher Kathleen Purdy, who also sought the nomination.[3] However, Schiavoni easily won the nomination with 65.39% of the vote.[4] He went on to face Republican Matt Lewis in the general election, but won again with 56.72% of the electorate.[5]
For the 129th General Assembly, Schiavoni is a member of the committees on Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources; Energy and Public Utilities (as ranking member); Highways and Transportation; Insurance, Commerce and Labor (as ranking member); and Judiciary-Criminal Justice. He also is a member of the eTech Ohio Commission and the the Joint Legislative Ethics Committee.
Initiatives and positions
In 2011, Schiavoni has introduced legislation to assure unemployment benefits for people in certain family circumstances.
Schiavoni has been a vocal opponent of the Senate's initiative to take away collective bargaining rights for state employees, stating "This bill will likely lead to lower wages and benefits for police officers, firefighters and other public employees who put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe.[6] He has also been critical at the speed the bill has been moved through the Senate. "I understand that some may feel that the bill has already received a considerable amount of testimony, but these sections of law have been in effect for over 27 years," Schiavoni wrote. "It would be unjust for us to vote this bill out of committee with the 20 hours of public testimony we've heard to date and without additional feedback on the substitute bill."[7]
