Son in Law is a 1993 comedy film starring Pauly Shore, Carla Gugino, Lane Smith, Cindy Pickett, Tiffani Thiessen, Patrick Renna, Dan Gauthier and Dennis Burkley.
Plot
Rebecca "Becca" Warner (Carla Gugino) is a small town South Dakota farm girl who has given up the small town life in lieu of college at the University of Los Angeles. After arriving, she encounters a massive culture shock in both the city and her own dorm, her roommate is a lesbian and the shocking parties and habits of the Californian culture has her seriously considering returning home. Until she meets Crawl (Pauly Shore) her dorm residential advisor who has been attending college for several years, he persuades her to stay in California and begins to introduce her to the lifestyles and customs that she had been so afraid of. She begins to enjoy her time, and gives herself a makeover, cutting and dying her hair and even getting the tattoo of a butterfly on her ankle. When it comes time for the Thanksgiving holiday break, an impending almost-definite proposal from Becca's at-home boyfriend Travis fills her with mixed feelings with what she's learned about living out on her own. Discovering that Crawl has no family to visit during this time, she impulsively invites him to come spend Thanksgiving with her family.
Upon her return home, Becca's parents Walter (Lane Smith), Connie (Cindy Picket), her teenage brother Zack (Patrick Renna), her grandfather Walter Sr. (Mason Adams) and Travis (Dan Gauthier) are shocked by her SoCal style and changes, and their normally conservative lifestyle is abruptly intruded upon by Crawl who immediately got off on Walter's wrong foot when they were moving Becca into the dorms. Their objections are kept relatively down low until they go to dinner when Becca prompts Crawl to intervene with Travis' proposal and on improvisation says that he had already proposed. The announcement prompts Travis to punch Crawl in the face, causing his nose to bleed and making a big scene even worse. Walter is appalled at the idea, especially when Crawl claims his interest in someday inheriting the Warner's dairy farm, and between his and farmhand Theo's (Dennis Burkley) assistance, sending him through the pratfalls and often failures of adjusting to farm life, Crawl rebounds incredibly, slowly earning Walter's grudging respect. Crawl also makes friends with one of Becca's high school friends Tracy (Tiffani Thiessen) as he adjusts to the life of a country boy.
Slowly, but surely. Crawl's distinctive and outgoing nature begins to settle into the hearts of the Warners. Crawl attempts to save Walter Sr.'s life though CPR when he has a spell without his heart medication, his abundant knowledge of computers and youthful attitude endears him to Zack who starts to think of Crawl as a big brother. And Connie is brought out of her shell through Crawl's coaching and praise of her hidden good looks. Additional notes
Brendan Fraser makes an appearance at Crawl's Halloween party. He is playing the same character Link as he did in the film Encino Man. Crawl says "Great costume!", looks at him curiously after Link bites into a frog, then shakes it off and says "Nah"!
Carla Gugino and Pauly Shore later both appear in an episode of the HBO series Entourage. Dan Gauthier and Tiffani Thiessen appeared together in the TV movie Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style (as well as Beverly Hills, 90210). Carla Gugino also appeared on an early episode of the Saved by the Bell TV series (entitled "Good Morning, Miss Bliss" at the time.)
The tattoo that Becca gets in Los Angeles is actually Carla Gugino's real, pre-existing tattoo. The tattooist is actually musician Flea (of Red Hot Chili Peppers fame), though he is not credited. Disc jockey Mark Osgood can be seen skateboarding by the tattoo shop as Pauly and Carla are walking in.
The promotional poster for the film is a parody of the painting American Gothic. The opening title sequence and graduation ceremony scene were filmed at Wasco Union High School, located in Wasco, CA. Wasco Union High School is known as Wasco Tigers, not the Lincoln Tigers as shown in the film.
