HI

Hi I am a senior at Simmons College and was wondering if you would help me out as my mentor with this project. We have not picked our topics yet but will do so in the next week. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Symons2 (talkcontribs) 06:11, 28 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'd be glad to be your mentor. I'll pop a note on your talk page tomorrow morning ;) sonia 09:20, 28 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I just went and found a ton of articles they are on my user page. Let me know what you think. Thanks Symons2 (talk) 19:34, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I put you down because of copy-editing the translation. Thank you for the help! See you round! TCO (talk) 02:35, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, right. CET asked me to look over his translation- I didn't expect that that would be counted as "creation or substantial expansion"! Either way- I'd be happy to do a copyedit for you any time :) sonia 04:56, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Be my mentor for my Public Relations Seminar class!

Hi my name is Claudia. A senior in Simmons College. Communications Major with a minor in Managament and Film. I use wikipedia, but never ever added or contributed to it before this class. And to be honest I have no idea what I am doing with Wiki and its editing tool. Hopefully I am able t catch up. For our class each student has to research, write, and edit a Wikipedia entry on a public policy issue that is integral to a case study of crisis communications that I select or is given to me. I have 2 cases that I need to research; one on GM and one on WikiLeaks. Cdjsuarez (talk) 15:49, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Claudia! I'd love to be your mentor. I've dropped you a welcome message that hopefully helps you a bit with what you're doing on-wiki; you can always reach me on Gtalk or MSN if you'd like real-time help with editing (email me for details). Your class looks to be following the suggested timeline for the most part; I'll be following that along and checking on you as time passes, but do feel free to ask for help with anything at any point, and explore the place beyond the constraints of your assignment! sonia 04:29, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So I am interested in working on some LGBT rights or Human rights in the US, but my professor finds the topic too broad, and maybe not enough to work on or edit on. Do you have any suggestions? Also - I am researching some more this weekend - but feel free to give me feedback and advise. Cdjsuarez (talk) 18:35, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Im looking for a mentor, would you possibly consider...

I'm new to Wikipedia as a student at Montana State University, taking NAS 426 Law and Policy and am looking for an online mentor, who will be available to offer advice and assistance as I start editing. Thanks Misstbird 153.90.170.89 (talk) 19:11, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Misstbird, I see that you've also asked KrakatoaKatie about this; I feel she would be a better mentor and will leave it up to her :) If she's too busy to take you on, I'm afraid I've already got the two mentees I've set as my tentative limit this semester, but I can certainly point you to others in our group of excellent mentors whom I've had personal contact with and trust. Don't feel restricted by your assignment's details-- experimenting with Wikipedia (especially before the due dates start looming) will help you do well and make this experience more fun as well! :) sonia 04:29, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mentor request

Hey Sonia,

I am a student at James Madison University in a copy editing class. We are working on a wikipedia project doing copy editing on public policy pages. I'd love for you to be my mentor if your up to it. Thanks for your time!

Ohheyheidi (talk) 21:14, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ohheyheidi, good to see a student who's really getting into the swing of editing. From what I can see, you've done excellently so far, especially in leaving descriptive summaries of what you're doing in each edit. Unfortunately, I'm a bit busy this semester and feel you'd be better off with a mentor who has more time to devote to the project- I'd be more than happy to point you in the direction of one who I think would do a great job, if you'd like that. Do take the time to mess around with Wikipedia outside your course's scope, though- I came to love it and I hope you do too! We're always in need of more editors like you. :) Let me know what you decide. sonia 04:29, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Coordinating a course

Hey Sonia, would you be interested in coordinating Wikipedia:WikiProject United States Public Policy/Courses/Spring 2011/Public Relations Seminar (Marlene Fine)? It would just require occasionally checking that nothing falls through the woodworks working with the students, and making sure the ambassadors are responding to queries and reviewing content. Also, if there are issues or the class needs attention, you could be the central contact for e-mailing the Google group, etc. If not, no worries, someone else can do it to! Sadads (talk) 01:49, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. I told myself that I'd be very careful about committing to things this term, because I'm undertaking part-time study (math, for any curious talk page stalkers) on top of carrying on with nearly everything I had been involved with in 2010; toward the end of last year life had become a bit much and I don't want that to happen again. However, seeing as I'm already mentoring two students from what appears to be a fairly small and well-organized class with experienced campus ambassadors, I'll give it further thought. (For what it's worth, halfway through last semester I volunteered to coordinate a course, but there was much lesser activity than anticipated and keeping track of all the students- who for the most part did not have mentors- was a nightmare.)
Also, you've showed up quite a lot on my watchlist of late inviting editors into the programme or otherwise doing work for it- I'd like to thank you for the effort you've gone to in not only keeping up with all this, but taking the initiative to go far beyond. sonia 04:29, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am glad to see you appreciate my efforts. I really do feel this program is invaluable to the community and has unfettered potential if we figure out ways to make it effective. Again, I don't want to put too much pressure on you, but I think everyone would appreciate your support :) Sadads (talk) 04:42, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mentor Request

Hi Sonia, I am a junior at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. I am majoring in Media Arts and Design and Writing, Rhetoric and Technical Communications. This semester, I am in a Professional and Technical Editing class that is working on the U.S. Public Policy Project. I have yet to pick the exact topic that I will be working on. I was hoping that once I do, you will be able to help me and answer any questions that I may have. Will you be my mentor?

DsgnWrte (talk) 20:46, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi DsgnWrte, I'm sorry about the extremely belated response- I see Dana's happy to be your mentor though, and I'd recommend her over myself any day. Glad to see you getting stuck into editing already- take the time to explore the place a bit, and have fun! I hope that you'll stay on after your assignment finishes :) sonia 08:02, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

mentorship

Hello there, I selected you as my mentor when we started this project. On our class page, it doesn't show you next to my screen name. Are we good to go here or should I find another mentor? thanks so much! Penandpad — Preceding unsigned comment added by Penandpad (talkcontribs) 21:41, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Penandpad, I don't believe I was aware of your choice. If you take a look at your contribs, you'll see the list of edits you've made so far-- only one to my talk page (and thus to communicate with me), and that was the one you've made just now. I'm unfortunately full up on mentees and don't want to take you on only to find I can't meet your needs; however, I'd be more than happy to recommend you to another mentor who'll do a great job. Good to see you testing things out- being bold and having fun are important things! I'm sorry for the inconvenience, do let me know if you'd like me to suggest another mentor. Happy editing, sonia 00:08, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

My subpage Article

I've noticed you've fixed my spelling mistake. Thanks for picking that up. My only concern for that one footnote, I was going to make it longer and explain that "England offered refuge" (Whittle, (2010) p. 9.) but I thought that this footnote was only for his birth place and year, while adding his parents were German. I'll think about where I could put his parents background and "England offeredd refuge" somewhere in the article, while I'm in no hurry to post it to the main article on wikipedia. As long as no one else makes any edits before I do! Thanks for your help in #wikipedia-en-help. I'll add your page to my watchlist. Adamdaley (talk) 06:25, 5 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

sonia,

Could you read the lead paragraph to see if it makes sense and make any changes that you think would work. Trying to get his multiple names to the "note" section and even the meaning of his name to the "note" section. Adamdaley (talk) 13:08, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

will do. sonia 22:52, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I can see what you've done. I did find a little mistake you made missing a fullstop, then the footnote should be after the fullstop, I can easily fix that myself. This is the second article that I've helped with but the first article a major addition. Sadly, this article, does have a few other people who were involved with this person directly or indirectly, but at the moment I'm concentrating on this one. I'll do a little more of it tonight or tomorrow. Once again, your help is appreciated. How much do you charge for each edit? Adamdaley (talk) 09:14, 12 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Merged all your sections on this talk page into one for easy reference, Adam, hope you don't mind. I'm more than happy to keep working w/ you on the article, and on any more you're creating-- you've done very well. Charge? I'll think about it and get back to you ;) sonia 01:37, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking of doing the "merging" of the three sections into one. But I wasn't sure if you would like it or not. The only article I'm working on is the one on my subpage. There is starting to be a problem with the opening paragraph and then his early life with information I have. It's conflicting and I know the opening paragraph is only an basic summary of who this guy was and what he was notable for. The main conflict is how to word it and where to put it then reference/source/footnote it. For example, in his information box there is a name used as "Emil R. Goldfus", one book has it like that, then another one has "Emil Robert Goldfus". A second example would be another name he used "Andrew Kayotis" which is the English translation from the Lithuanian name but later in the same book it has "Andrew Yurgesovich Kayotis". So I am a little confused on what to do about those two examples. Which are already referenced or footnoted without the middle name. Once again I appreciate all the help you've done for me. Also, I have your discussion/talkpage on my watchlist. Adamdaley (talk) 05:52, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thinking about it. sonia 22:12, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Japan Earthquake

You are probably 'all quaked out', but there has been a major quake (8.9!), and a tsunami in Japan! See 2011 Sendai earthquake and tsunami. Oz TV News said 5th biggest ever recorded! - 220.101 talk\Contribs 07:33, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I got nineteen edit conflicts trying to copyedit that article last night! Poor Japan; aftershocks every ten minutes- each comparable in intensity to the Chch quake! sonia 22:52, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I got 3! But that was only about 3½ hours after the event trying to edit the lead. Indeed, in hindsight, Christchurch may have gotten off lightly. (No tsunami!) Now there are considerable back and forth reports about the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant and a related, (premature I hope!) article Fukushima I disaster.
• The SAR teams now all have recent experience, and some may be able to go straight to Japan (the Japanese SAR team have gone early) as they are already 'in the area.' So some 'good' is coming from your quake, perhaps. :-{ - 220.101 talk\Contribs 14:36, 12 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes :-/ I've recently been involved in helping settle a few exchange students who were studying in Chch into schools here, and it's been a difficult enough road for them already without having to worry about family back home... Made a few minor tweaks to the power plant article, might go through and citeweb all the refs if I have time. sonia 01:37, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Japanese are they? The "power plant article" is becoming the real story, hope it ends well. Fukushima I disaster as mentioned above, was deleted, but is now a re-direct to the Power Plant thought there is a discussion that seems to be leading to a split again. The video of the explosion of the reactor building was reather worrying. (Godzilla fans had some 'fun' saying it was his/her fault. Rubbish, I know it's Mothra! ;-) )
• The tsunami though reached as far as Oregon(where I have an Uncle, living 'inland') and caused US$30-50 Million(est.) damage in Brookings, Oregon (Updated by moi of course!) - 220.101 talk\Contribs 07:56, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Mm, Japanese. Seems they've all been able to contact family back home, which is good. I think a split might be a good idea, but perhaps it's a bit early to tell... sonia 22:12, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Twas split, now merged again (when I started typing anyway!), but apparently against concensus. Re-merge 'discussion' was proposer, one other registered, and one IP editor over about 80 minutes. Took 43 min. for someone to say 'nay' though! The 6 opposers + 'request for independent opinion'. Don't know if this duscussion link will work, if it gets 'de-merged'. Marking articles students are working on

Howdy, Online Ambassador!

This is a quick message to all the ambassadors about marking and tracking which articles students are working on. For the classes working with the ambassador program, please look over any articles being worked on by students (in particular, any ones you are mentoring, but others who don't have mentors as well) and do these things:

  1. Add {{WAP assignment | term = Spring 2011 }} to the articles' talk pages. (The other parameters of the {{WAP assignment}} template are helpful, so please add them as well, but the term = Spring 2011 one is most important.)
  2. If the article is related to United States public policy, make sure the article the WikiProject banner is on the talk page: {{WikiProject United States Public Policy}}
  3. Add Category:Article Feedback Pilot (a hidden category) to the article itself. The second phase of the Article Feedback Tool project has started, and this time we're trying to include all of the articles students are working on. Please test out the Article Feedback Tool, as well. The new version just deployed, so any bug reports or feedback will be appreciated by the tech team working on it.

And of course, don't forget to check in on the students, give them constructive feedback, praise them for positive contributions, award them {{The WikiPen}} if they are doing excellent work, and so on. And if you haven't done so, make sure any students you are mentoring are listed on your mentor profile.

Thanks! --Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 18:14, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Will do. sonia 08:14, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
