32°50′0″N 13°10′26″E / 32.83333°N 13.17389°E Abu Salim prison is a top security prison in Tripoli, Libya which is often described as "notorious" by human rights activists and other observers.[1][2][3] Amnesty International has called for a independent inquiry into deaths that occurred there in 1996,[4] an incident which Amnesty International and other news media refer to as the Abu Salim prison massacre.[5] Human Rights Watch believes that 1,270 prisoners were killed,[6][7] and calls it a "site of egregious human rights violations."[7] Western governments largely ignored this and no international inquiry was launched, due to "oil interests".[8]
YouTube videos
On January 24, 2010, Libya blocked access to YouTube after it featured videos of demonstrations in the Libyan city of Benghazi by families of detainees who were killed in Abu Salim prison in 1996, and videos of family members of Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi at parties. The blocking was criticized by Human Rights Watch.[9] It has also staged large demonstrations in the city of Al Bayda on April 5, 2009.[10]
