The first academic session in IIT Jodhpur commenced in August 2008.

Following the recommendations of a high-power committee headed by Prof Vijay Shankar Vyas, both the Rajasthan state government and MHRD have approved Jodhpur as the city where IIT Jodhpur will be set up. The final approval came in the month of November 2009. IIT Jodhpur will be located about 22 km from Jodhpur city on National Highway 65 which connects Jodhpur to Nagaur. The IIT site would be sprawling about 900 acres (3.6 km2) of land around Jhipasni and Gharao villages. The construction of the fully residential campus of IIT Jodhpur is expected to start in the later part of 2010.

For the next two years, IIT Jodhpur will have its academic and administrative block in the MBM Engineering College, Ratanada, Jodhpur. All the students and faculty will be having their new addresses in Jodhpur by July 2010. For IIT Jodhpur the "wait" in site selection has been the longest of all new IITs.
