Tral(ترال) is a town and a notified area committee in Pulwama district, of Jammu and Kashmir, India.

Geography

Tral is located at 33°56′N 75°06′E / 33.93°N 75.1°E / 33.93; 75.1.[1] It has an average elevation of 1662 metres (5452 feet). Tral is a township which is 10 km away from National Highway(NH-1A). Tral is known for natural springs, both hot and cold. Some springs remain hot in winter and cold in summer. It has certain adjacent areas called by the name Diver,Sofigund, Mandoora, Monghama ,Kuchmullah, Nadar, Aripal, Zuwastan, Narastan, Laam, Naagberan, Amirabad, Dadasra, Kunjbal, Kounsarbal and Shikaragh .

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Tral had a population of 11,607. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Tral has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 71%, and female literacy is 45%.

History

Five hundred years ago the real name of Tral was (تریہ لال) Three Pearls because the whole area was purchased by Hazrat Ameer Kabeer (RA) (who came from Baghdad to spread Islam in Kashmir) in three pearls.

Personalities

Tral town has been fertile in creating some eminent figures in Kashmir valley, including among them are Ali Mohd Naik Ex.MP parliament of India, Late Mohd Subhan Bhat ( had worked as minister of state), Ghulam Nabi Naik (Ex. Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and father of: Major- General Mohammed Amin Naik breached the dividing wall in 2008. In April that year, he became the first Kashmiri Muslim to become a General in the Indian Army. Major- General Naik is a known name in the once- militancy- affected Dadsar area of Tral), Dr. A R Trag (Retired Director research SKUAST-K), Dr Jauhar Quddusi (Professor of Urdu, Writer & Editor in Chief of Monthly Alhayat & Crescent). Apart from these Dr A. G. Ahanger (Prof & Head CVTS SKIMS Soura), and Dr Mohd Ashraf-Sheikh M Ashraf (Registrar in Pediatrics SKIMS Medical College Bemina), a high caliber researcher, writer besides being an outstanding pediatrician.
