Ricardo Mayorga (born March 10, 1973 in Managua, Nicaragua), is a Nicaraguan professional boxer. He is the former WBA/WBC Welterweight champion and the former WBC Junior Middleweight champion. He holds a record of 29-8 with 23 knockouts and 1 draw 1 no contest. He was featured for the first time on the cover of Ring Magazine on the December 2003 issue, released in October. The cover read "The craziest man in the sport: Mayorga lights up boxing."

Mixed martial arts

Mayorga was scheduled to make his debut May 15, 2010 against UFC veteran Din Thomas in the Shine Fights: Worlds Collide: Mayorga vs. Thomas card.^[1] Don King filed for an injunction the week of the fight to prevent him from participating, claiming Mayorga had an exclusive contract with Don King Promotions (DKP).

Shine Fights stated that Mayorga's contract with DKP was for boxing, and as such did not apply to mixed martial arts. Judge Marc Gold granted the injunction just several hours before the fight.^[2] Later on the same day, Shine Fights officials conceded defeat in the matter and Mayorga was pulled off the card.^[3]

WikiLeaks implication

Mayorga was implicated in a WikiLeaks cable for apparently making a deal with, and being blackmailed by, the Nicaraguan government over the rape of a young woman in a hotel in September 2004, one month before his fight with Felix Trinidad. According to the leaked cable, Mayorga received a not guilty verdict in return for a large proportion of his prize money from boxing.^[4]

Semi Retirement

After his bout with Miguel Cotto, Mayorga announced that he would be retiring from boxing. However, a few days after making that statement, Mayorga retracted his comments and said he would be planning a comeback, stating that he would like to fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
