It is part of School District 54 which includes 5 other junior high and many elementary schools. Students from Mead Junior High mostly advance to James B. Conant High School in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. However, some students may also go to William Fremd High School, Schaumburg High School, Hoffman Estates High School or other schools in Township High School District 211. The colors for Mead are green, black, and white. In addition, their mascot is the mustang. They additionally house the district's junior high magnet program. Mead received the U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence in Education in 1995.[1] The Illinois State Board of Education also recognized Mead’s high standards as an educational community worthy of emulation.

All students take social science, science, mathematics, physical education, and language arts classes, along with 20 minutes of study hall and lunch. Students are able to choose two class periods for elective or exploratory classes. Exploratories are 12-week courses that may include World Cultures, Study Skills, Media, Art, and Music. Electives are Band, Orchestra, Chorus, Spanish, French, Media and Art.

Many students also choose to join after school activities, such as Yearbook, Drama, Community Service, Student Council, Chat Room, Mead’s Newspaper, Science Olympiad, Math Club, Chess Club, Ping-Pong club, Drama Club, Partner’s Club, Bocce, Irish Football, Improv, Poms and Yoga Club. Interscholastic sports include cross-country, boys and girls basketball, cheerleading, girls volleyball, wrestling, and track and field.[2] Students may also choose intramural activities that include basketball, ping pong, open gym, and social interaction.

Athletics

Both the wrestling and volleyball teams won championships during the 2007-2008 school year. The 7th grade boys basketball team won the District 54 Tournament in the 08-09 school year The 8th grade team from 09-10 led the conference with a perfect record. The 2009 7th grade girls basketball team were not only the conference champions, but they also won the District 54 Tournament and suffered their only loss of the year while placing 3rd in the District 15 tournament. In the 2009-2010 year, the 8th grade Cross Country team won the dual meet season, undefeated for the first time in 30 years.
