Mount Vernon High School (MVHS) is a high school in Mount Vernon, Washington located at 314 North 9th Street.
The school enrolls over 1,700 students in grades 9–12. The school's schedule is based on 84-minute periods and a 4-period block schedule, which has students go to periods 1–4 (Green Day) and periods 5–8 (White Day) the next day. MVHS is diverse demographically with many different ethnicities: white 50%, Hispanic 45%, Asian 3%, Native American 1%, black 1%. The school colors are kelly green and white, and the mascot is a bulldog. The school's traditional rival is Burlington-Edison High School.
The Bulldog
MVHS's newspaper, The Bulldog, is published monthly during the school year.
Skagina
The Skagina is the name of MVHS' annual yearbook and has been published every year since 1907.
Athletics
MVHS competes in the WIAA 3A Conference.
Football
Mount Vernon High School's Bulldog varsity football program is currently coached by Jaxson Schwickert.
In 2008, the team won a spot in the WIAA 3A playoffs, facing the classification's number 10 team, Renton and winning the first round game; their first playoff win in 7 years. In the second round, the Bulldogs lost to Ferndale High School with a score of 14-0.
After the 2008 season, 9 Bulldog players were named to the 3A All-Conference Team, including nose tackle Danial Osburn - the consensus All-State Defensive Lineman choice to represent the 3A conference in the Seattle Times 3A All-State game.
Basketball
MVHS' boy's basketball team has won three state titles (1991, 1992, 2001) under the direction of coach Mac Fraser as well as 3 second-place finishes (1990, 1997, 2000). Currently, the MVHS basketball program is coached by Mount Vernon High School alumnus Torey Swanson.
Gymnasium
In 2003, The Seattle Times' sports reporter Craig Smith named Mount Vernon High School's gymnasium the number one high-school gym in the state.[1] Bulldog fans are known for their generous show of school pride at games wearing Bulldog green and white. Because of the gymnasium's old-style construction of wood rafters and open ceilings without sound dampering, school assemblies and sports events are notoriously loud. During assemblies, the student body shows their allegiance to MVHS with much clapping and precision-timed yells of "Bulldog Power!".
