The Gangster Disciples (also Black Gangster Disciples and a number of other regional variations) is one of the largest street gangs in the United States. Originally formed in the south side of Chicago, they still have a wide presence there and in other midwest cities. Their affiliation is with the Folk Nation.

Symbols used by the Gangster Disciples include a six pointed star (Star of David) in rememberance to one of the originators David Barksdale, although there is no connection to the Jewish symbol and crossed pitchforks.

The Gangster Disciples are known to be involved in about $100 million a year of drug trafficking.

Their main rivals are the Vice Lords and Latin Kings.

HISTORY

Gangster Disciples was formed on the south side of Chicago in the 1960's by uniting two seperate gangs. The two gangs conjoined were The Supreme Disciples, lead by Larry Hoover(The Current Leader) and The Gonzantos Disciples, lead by David Barkesdale. The GDs formed under the original name of Black Gangster Disciples Nation, or simply BGDN. In 1972 David Barkesdale died in prison and Larry Hoover took over from there, and promoted former member of Gonzanots disciples, Jerome Freeman. Jerome was completely against the conjoining of the two gangs, and demanded a split leadership. Half of the gang stayed with Hoover and they changed their name to Black Gangster Disciples, or simply BGD. The other half that went with Jerome, formed a gang titled Black Disciples, or simply BDs. Over the years these gangs were rivals and beheld many gang wars. In the end the BDs were pushed further down south and completely seperated themselves from GDs, but remained members of the Folk Nation.
