Sonic Generations is an upcoming 2011 platformer in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, which is currently in production by Sonic Team for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. It celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game and will be released by Sega in late 2011.[1][2]

Gameplay

The game features levels derived from 20 years of Sonic history, ranging from the Classic era, through the Dreamcast era, to the Modern era. Each level can be played with either Classic Sonic or Modern Sonic, each taking their own routes throughout the level.[3] Classic Sonic's levels are strictly two dimensional side scrolling stages, using classic moves like the Spin Attack and Spin Dash. Modern Sonic's levels, on the other hand, carry on the modern 2D/3D gameplay of recent titles such as Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors, featuring Homing Attacks and Speed Boosts.[2]

Development

The game was first revealed on April 7, 2011, when Sega posted a teaser trailer on their Facebook page.[4] The teaser depicted both modern and classic interpretations of Sonic the Hedgehog running alongside each other. The game was officially unveiled as Sonic Generations on April 18, 2011, along with the first gameplay trailer.[5] The game's plot, which involves a mysterious new power which creates 'time holes' that send Sonic and his friends back in time to meet his former self, is being penned by Ken Pontac and Warren Graff, who previously worked on Sonic Colors.[6]
