The Tareen (or properly Tarin) (Template:Lang-ps) are a prominent Sarbanri Pashtun tribe residing in Afghanistan and in Pakistan. They are one of the largest Pashtun tribes.[citation needed]

History

The Tareen played a key role in Sultan Muhammad Ghori's army and showed great bravery. The Tareen tribes of Hazara migrated from Kandahar as well as the Pishin District of Balochistan in the 17th century CE under the leadership of Sher Khan Tareen. There is also a sub-tribe of Tareen in Quetta (Kanak) is known as Raisani tribe, they speak Brahvi but originally it is sub-tribe of Tor Tareen tribe. There is a wrong concept about the Raisani tribe that it is a Baloch tribe. Raisani is basically a Pashtoon tribe.

During his conquest of India, Ahmed Shah Abdali deputed powerful tribal chiefs with conquered areas. In the Hazara region, among the deputed chiefs were Najeebullah Khan Tareen, Sa'adat Khan Swati of Garhi Habibullah, and Mir Zabardast Khan Tanoli (also known as Suba Khan Tanoli). Tareens have some history with other Pashtun tribes Jadoon and Shilmani or sulmani in the Hazara region, uniting against Sikhs during the period of Sikh rule. People like Sardar Muhammad Khan Tareen and Sardar Bostan Khan Tareen staunchly resisted the Sikh empire and are now revered as heroes of Hazara history///

Branches of the Tareen Tribe

The famous Khels and subsections of the Tareen tribe are

  • Tor
  • Spin
  • Bor or Abdaal
  • Zharh

Tor Tareen

Tor Tareen is sub-tribe of Tareen. Tor Tareen is credited by local tradition as having had a son, Babo, who in turn had two son Ali (Alizai) and Haroon or Harun (Haroonzai) or (Harunzai). The descendants of Ali are known as the Alizai, while those of Haroon or Harun are divided into the following principal sections:

Bor Tareen or Abdaal Tareen

The founder of the Durrani dynasty, Ahmad Shah Abdali, originated from the Abdali or Bor Tareen tribe but changed the name later to Durrani.[citation needed] The current President of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, is Popalzai from Kandahar.[citation needed] The Sadduzai are a lineage of the Popalzai clan of the Abdali sub-tribe of the Tareen - Abdal Tareen tribe of Pashtuns. Most of the notable Afghan kings and rulers belong to Sadduzai and Barakzai clans.

The term Abdal, however, gradually superseded that of Bor Tareen and came into special prominence when Ahmad Shah Abdali, commonly known as Durrani, began his career of conquest. The Achakzais are, strictly speaking, a branch of the Barakzai but Ahmad Shah, himself an Abdal Tareen, fearing the growing numbers of the Barakzai, separated them from the parent stock, since which time their organization has remained distinct. It is still used, though sparingly, for the Achakzais, who have become localised in Toba and are regarded as a separate political unit from the rest of the Tareens. According to Hyat Khan's history of Afghanistan, from their progenitor Bor Tareen, otherwise known as Abdal, are descended two main divisions: the Zirak and the Panjpai.

In Balochistan the major subtribes of Tor Tareen are the Khudaidadzai (the Aghakhel or Pirkhana of Tareen Tribes) and the Nurzai (the Sardars or Khans of the Tareen tribes). The tribes of the Tor Tareen in Pishin are: Haroonzai and Alizai and their subtribes are: Nurzai, Khudaidadzai, Saimzai, Lalazai, Milezai, Shadizai, Mohammadzai, Batezai, Heikalzai, Sheikhalzai, Kamalzai, Khanzai, Omerzai, Habibzai, Sopanzai, Sakhizai, Balozai, Segi, Raisani etc.,.Wazir, Jam, Sulaiman, Omchai are the sub-tribe of Spin Tareen. Abdaal Tareen, or Abdali, is now a separate tribe, and usually goes by the name Durrani.

The Durrani confederacy, no longer considered part of the Tareen tribe, is one of the two most powerful tribal confederacies in Afghanistan.[citation needed] The other is led by the Ghilzai tribe. Tareens were from southern Afghanistan, then they migrated to India. They are now mostly in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Europe, Canada and America.

The overall Sardars/Chiefs of the Tor Tareen tribe are settled in Distt Pishin Balochistan, named Sardaran or Khanaan Family of Torashah village; they are the Haroonzai - Nurzai sub-tribe of Toor Tareen. The Sardars of Spin Tareen are settled in Distt Loralai Tehsil Dukki and Harnai Distt.

Tareen residence

The origins of the Tareen tribe are in Tareen Kowt in the Orūzgān Province of Afghanistan and Pishin near Quetta in Pakistan's Balochistan Province. This area was formerly a part of Afghanistan but was ceded to the British after the Second Afghan War.[citation needed] Some families migrated to Haripur in Hazara Division in the present Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan (then part of British India). The Tareens have a sizeable presence in Multan since the times of Ahmad Shah Abdali Durrani.

They now live in Afghanistan, Kandahar, Helmand, Oruzgan, Tareen Kowt, Pishin, Mastung, Gulistan, Quetta, Ziarat, Loralai, Harnai, Sharaga, Khost, Sanjavi, Dukki, Bolan, Sibi, Gandava, Qallat, Usta Mohammad (District Jafferabad), Multan, Rahim Yar Khan, Lodarahan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Attock, Chhachh, Peshawar, Haripur, Abbotabbad (Hazara Division) and in Sindh.

For the most part, Toor Tareens are settled in Quetta, Pishin, Saigi (Gulistan), Ziarat, Haripur, Multan, Kandahar, Helmand, Orzgun - Tarin Kowt Afghanistan, etc. Spin Tareens are settled in Quetta, Loralai, Harnai, Dukki, Sinjavi, etc. The Zharh Tareens are mainly settled in Mastung.
