He currently holds the appointments of acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports and Minister of State for MICA. He is a Member of Parliament-elect for Tanjong Pagar Group Representation Constituency.
Non-Political Career
Chan served as the army chief from March 26, 2010 to March 25, 2011. He replaced then-Major-General Neo Kian Hong and was succeeded by Brigadier-General Ravinder Singh. Major-General Chan stood down from his position and retired from the SAF on March 25, 2011.[2] Prior to his appointment as Chief of Army, he held the position of Chief of Staff — Joint Staff within the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).

Chan was a candidate for Singapore's People's Action Party in the general election of 2011, and would have been fielded in Tanjong Pagar Group Representation Constituency's[4] Buona Vista ward, replacing Lim Swee Say.[5] However, on Nomination Day, April 27, 2011, his team led by Lee Kuan Yew was returned without contest and elected to Parliament.[6]
