Getting the runaround in Wikipedia
I thought this was solved long time ago. I am using an shared broadband connection and apparently someone under this single IP address is using Tor sometimes. I am not using Tor or any other anonymising service. I explained this to a friendly admin, and he set up an exemption from IP blocking for my account some time ago. And it worked fine then. (For me at en.wikipedia and de.wikipedia!)

But now suddenly I am blocked again because of Tor activity on the IP address I am using. This is annoying already, but it got totally mega annoying when I - again - followed all the good and nice explanations and recommendations that followed, cursing silently. I don't like being sent from pillar to post.

"You have been blocked because it has been detected that you are using Tor ... bla bla ... you need to request an account ..." - what? I have an account and I am logged in! - "... and then request block exemption." - I did that long time ago, see my talk page.

Well. So I went to Wikipedia:IP_block_exemption. Much text to read, then the useful hint: "A user affected by an IP block that is unrelated to their editing and that prevents them editing with a logged-in account. - How to request.": Wikipedia:APPEAL. "7. I want to edit Wikipedia, but I keep getting blocked because of others on the same network as me!" - not quite helpful - "Requesting to be unblocked" - okay. "Instructions for requesting an unblock will be placed on your talk page or in the block explanation." - no it wasn't or it was too well hidden for me to see it. - "The preferred way to appeal a block is to use the {unblock} template, but you can also contact the blocking administrator or appeal by email." - okay let's see the unblock template - "The following should be placed on your talk page:" - well I would like to, but when trying to edit my own talk page it says: "You have been blocked because it has been detected that you are using Tor ..." - back to the beginning!

Well, I still might try to contact an administrator. Maybe the friendly one who created the block exemption before. But guess what - "You have been blocked because it has been detected that you are using Tor ..." - arghh!

Other ways to get help, the IRC chat maybe? No of course not. "Joining chat room... You are banned from this server - Due to abuse we currently accept tor connections via our tor-sasl service only ..." - sigh. This "tor-sasl" service is some service within tor, but since I am not using tor (and neither have a registered account at freenode) I can not use that. The webchat? - "Your reported IP is banned".

This is so frustrating. All that fuss just because I wanted to correct a tiny error on a Wikipedia page.

I wish I knew a solution for these problems. Do I actually need to appeal the block again, or is it some kind of error in MediaWiki? Should I send an Email as described in Wikipedia:Guide_to_appealing_blocks (one further page about the same topic), or try using the template?

[PS: And how was I able to post here? Luckily I could set up an alternative internet connection using my mobile phone as a modem. It's kind of slow and expensive, but at least this IP address is not blocked.]

I am a somewhat experience editor

considering posting a story in a local newspaper (which can't be viewed on line) on the Signpost, but can't figure out how to post it. Perhaps you can help? What I wanted to post is this:

Wikipedia in the Rio Arriba Sun, Thursday May 26th edition.
The headline, Website Reignites Spelling Debate: Tilde or No Tilde? is in large enough print so that it goes all the way across the top of page A13. The article by SUN Staff Writer Whitney Jones then begins with "Española's nomenclature is the source of a recent kerfuffle on the popular website Wikipedia. In an email to the Rio Grande SUN, Wikipedia contributer (amended to "contributor") **** ****** wrote he was engaged in a "nasty fight"..... and so it goes. To see how this article is going to be used check out the discussion (the last one) at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Espanola,_New_Mexico. Hope to see you there. Carptrash (talk) 03:25, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Since the story is going to be about spelling accuracy, it would be really good if you didn't spell the word 'contributor' as "contributer". -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 03:37, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well that's a good start. Carptrash (talk) 03:43, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm pretty sure "Re–ignites" should be hyphenated; I'm also baffled by the cap "T" for "Tilde". But then again, I'm English, so YMMV.  Chzz  ►  06:00, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well for that stuff I am just copying it as is printed in the paper. (not "contributer") We yanks don't like hyphenated words and figure capital letters mean "but more so." But I am getting the impression that this is not a good thing to pass on the Signpost because I'm getting no help doing that. Carptrash (talk) 06:57, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Have you seen the page Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Newsroom/Suggestions? -- John of Reading (talk) 07:55, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank-you John. No I had not seen it, but now have. Carptrash (talk) 16:25, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

biography

I don't know if i am in the right place? I was reading about robert opinhimer (atomic bomb physicist) after watching his story on pbs last week. your article states that pres john kennedy gave him the enrico ferme award in 1963. in the pbs story they showed lyndon johnson giving r.o. the award. should the wikipedia article be changed? regards, — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.150.152.36 (talk) 05:13, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Article J. Robert Oppenheimer
Currently says, At the urging of many of Oppenheimer's political friends who had ascended to power, President John F. Kennedy awarded Oppenheimer the Enrico Fermi Award in 1963 as a gesture of political rehabilitation. Edward Teller, the winner of the previous year's award, had also recommended Oppenheimer receive it, in the hope that it would heal the rift between them.Cassidy 2005 pp=348–349
If that fact is incorrect, please fix it; but find a reliable source.
Google books [1] indicates that Lyndon Johnson reinstated his security clearance in 1963, and he was presented with the AEC's Enrico Ferme Award [2] - not necc. that Johnson presented it.
Other sources[3] indicate Kennedy did give it.
But I suggest that, if you can find a good reference, please add it.
If there is doubt, discuss it on Talk:J. Robert Oppenheimer.  Chzz  ►  05:55, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How 'bout Kennedy awarded it to him and Johnson handed it to him 'cause JFK had a date that night? Carptrash (talk) 07:01, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The text accompanying this picture of Johnson presenting the award (on December 2, note) explains the matter. Don't forget that Kennedy didn't quite make it through 1963. Deor (talk) 13:03, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

According to Bird & Sherwin in American Prometheus: the triumph and tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer Kennedy announced that Oppenheimer would receive the the Fermi Award in the Spring of 1963. Two weeks before the ceremony on Dec 2 Kennedy was killed. So Johnson handed it over. It turned out that Kennedy's date was with destiny, not Marilyn. Convention for dealing with Discussion comments by socks

What is the convention for dealing with Discussion comments left by contributors later convicted of sockpuppetry? Can they be edited off the Discussion page by anyone? Should they be stricken out? Collapsed? Should they be left on the page but be followed by a notice that the user was a sock? Or is it best to leave such matters to be handled by an Admin? This isn't being asked in relation to cases of clear vandalism or otherwise disruptive edits. In particular, what if a sock's input to a discussion is actually of value? (Edited to add: And what if the sock left comments on another user's Talk page? Can those be excised by regular users?)—Biosketch (talk) 06:22, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The user is welcome to WP:refactor his own userpage and talk page, so feel to address as needed. You don't want to change anything on someone elses talk page unless it was indisputible vandalism. As far as article discussions, I wouldn't change it because, typically socks are involved in lenghty discussions and the removal of those exits will break the conversation flow. I would however make a note on the discussion page about the sock case and the users involved. Be sure not to out the editor, but simply call attention to the various usernames and link them to the WP:SPI case. Tiggerjay (talk) 06:43, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

adj=on

I just came across this added to a conversion - it looks like this. 5-mile (8.0 km) Can someone please tell me what 'adj=on' means?

Also can you tell me what autogenerated citations are used for. --Rskp (talk) 07:52, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In Template:Convert, it explains that the parameter 'adj' allows you to force an adjective, e.g. "The 190-foot (58 m) bridge" as opposed to "The 190 feet..."
Citations may be automatically created by tools, such as WP:REFLINKS.  Chzz  ►  07:55, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Is navbox name parameter linked to in any way?

Resolved
     – courtesy of Toshio and especially John. Thanks both!  – OhioStandard (talk) 11:37, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi all. I need to edit a template that uses a navbox. I don't want to change the template's name (i.e. I'm not trying to move it or use a redirect at all) but I do want to change two of its parameters, specifically its name and title parameters. I understand that the title parameter merely gives the display text that appears in the color bar at the top of the navbox, but what purpose does the name parameter fulfill? More important, will changing that name parameter somehow break links to the template or cause some other unintended consequence?  – OhioStandard (talk) 08:09, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The "name" parameter configures the "v · d · e" ("view · discuss · edit") links at the top left of the navbox. If you are not moving the template to a new name, you shouldn't change it. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:27, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Template:Navbox#Parameter descriptions says: "The name of the template, which is needed for the "v · d · e" ("view · discuss · edit") links to work properly on all pages where the template is used." So you only need to change the title-parameter if you want to change what is displayed. The name parameter must match the actual name of the template (without Template: written in front of it). So for Template:Foobar, the name parameter should read name = Foobar. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 08:34, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Dense of me not to have seen that; thanks John and Toshio. But on the template I'm looking at the "v · d · e" are, respectively, a redlink, a redlink, and a bluelink. When I click the bluelink to "edit", though, I land on an edit/create page for a not-yet-existing template. The name parameter is NOT the same as the page name that occurs in my browser address bar, if it helps to know that. I've never edited a template before, and don't want to screw it up, but this looks erroneous to me. More help, please?  – OhioStandard (talk) 10:50, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The "name" parameter should match the name of the template - as Toshio said, if Template:Foobar is a navbox, it should have name = Foobar. When done correctly, the "v" link should be a blue link; if the template has a talk page then the "d" link should be blue as well. Can you post a link to the template? -- John of Reading (talk) 10:57, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again, John. Here it is. I've noticed that a great many articles and such in this topic area employ redirects in an apparent attempt to use unilateral/partisan names instead of internationally recognised ones. Saw a different example just the other day, actually. I presume that's what's going on here, too, although I'm not experienced enough with templates to know for sure.  – OhioStandard (talk) 11:18, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've fixed that one. Editors are welcome to edit war over discuss the "title" parameter, but the "name" should be left alone. -- John of Reading (talk) 11:25, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, John, you're the best! I fully appreciate the wry humor in the strikethough also, all too well, I regret to say. My very cordial thanks.  – OhioStandard (talk) 11:37, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Tying to alter a picture

I am lost in the mass of instructions here, I am afraid. I have been editing the page on Henry Jermyn, Earl of St Albans, as it contained a number of extremely inaccurate statements about him. There was also a picture, purporting to be of him, which simply was not. I have managed to stop it being shown on the page, which is a good start. I then discovered how to upload a correct picture to 'Wiki Commons'. This is it: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jerpic1a.jpg I pasted this into the text on Henry Jermyn's page, but the picture does not appear. I am not surprised, really, as this is a technical matter, and I have no expertise in these things. Please would somebody who knows how this works explain in very great detail how I can make the picture appear, or, better still, could someone do it for me, please? In any event, it is better to have no picture at all, than the incorrect one, which is what was displayed before. Many thanks indeed, Anthony Adolph Anthony Adolph (talk) 08:57, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Incidentally, I have no idea how I will ever find an answer if one ever appears here.

Just noting here that me and another editor have left a note on Anthony's talkpage.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 09:09, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please do your own homework. Welcome to the Wikipedia Help desk. Your question appears to be a homework question. I apologize if this is a misevaluation, but it is our policy here not to do people's homework for them, but merely to aid them in doing it themselves. Letting someone else do your homework does not help you learn how to solve such problems.
Please attempt to solve the problem yourself first. You can search Wikipedia or search the Web.

Top contributor

How to learn who is the top contributor of the article? TGilmour (talk) 11:08, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think that's often a rather subjective measure. If by top contributor you mean who has done the most number of edits on an article, you can click the 'View history' tab at the top of an article in order to see who contributed. Is that what you have in mind? Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 11:15, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
A couple of inches down the history tab is a line of "External tools". The "Contributors" tool will summarise the number of edits made by each contributor. That still doesn't help you to assess the size or quality of the edits made, though. -- John of Reading (talk) 11:18, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you both. Yes, I meant the users who have made the most edits. TGilmour (talk) 13:32, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Anagrams

The Surface_Detail page till recently had a lot of edits removed by User:John. After discussion on John's talk page he posted his reasons on the discussion page - basically, that they were OR. I'd tend to disagree about my edits but they're not important enough to worry about.

One of the bits removed - not my edit - was the observation that the name of one character was an anagram of the name of another character. I'd been of the opinion that an anagram was an example of Wikipedia:CALC#Routine_calculations, so not OR. After all, solving an anagram is decidable in the Godelian sense, which arithmetic is not. But User:John disagreed. He's an administrator, I'm not, so that was that.

Some days later I realized that things declared to be anagrams were in use in other articles in Wikipedia to illustrate various points without benefit of a secondary source. Going by John's precedent, this is "original research". Looking at his talk page I didn't want to make the poor man's life any harder, so I left a note on the article's discussion page.

After digging a bit deeper in to the "Routine Calculations" I realized it actually mentioned "routine mathematical calculation", not simply arithmetic. It also included conversion templates which dealt with characters, also not arithmetical in nature.

Can I please ask which of the following would resolve the situation?

Globally remove any anagrams usage to support a proposition without secondary reference
Declaration that anagrams fall within the definition of Wikipedia:CALC#Routine_calculations
Creation of a different exception to WP:NOR.
None of the above - in which case some explanation would be of considerable help to this baffled bear of comparatively little brain.

--Sdoradus (talk) 13:04, 27 May 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sdoradus (talkcontribs) 13:03, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but I think this plot twist is original research, unless some reliable source has drawn the same conclusions. Otherwise...well, for example, I could read the book, and form my own interpretation deciding that 'Vatueil' was an anagram of 'Tau Evil', and work out some insane theory about Greek letters. Or something. Yes, that'd be silly, but it'd be just as 'mathematically correct' and valid.
I don't think a blanket ruling is necessary or appropriate. In some cases, an anagram could have been discussed in independent reliable sources - in which case, inclusion would certainly be appropriate. In most other cases, I would consider it OR because it would be 'novel' (if not reported elsewhere). However, most such complicated notions need exceptions and caveats, which results in excess instructions. I don't believe this to be a significant enough problem to worry about 'globally' - I suggest just discussing it on a case-by-case basis.  Chzz  ►  19:16, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Okay ... so the preferred option of the four above is "None of the above". Very well. The anagrams though embedded in the "Plot Twist" text you mention, don't actually relate to the twist. They do identify Zakalwe with Vatueil. But the text itself does that. There's no point in a reference.
For reference, here's a typical usage: (from Laonikos_Chalkokondyles) "Laonicus ... an anagram of Nikolaos which bears the same meaning".

Standard "how do I create an article" advice follows:

A Wizard is available to walk you through these steps. See the Article Wizard.

Thank you.
Before creating an article, please search Wikipedia first to make sure that an article does not already exist on the subject. Please also review a few of our relevant policies and guidelines with which all articles should comply. As Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, articles must not contain original research, must be written from a neutral point of view, should cite reliable sources which verify their content and must not contain unsourced, negative content about living people.
Articles must also demonstrate the notability of the subject. Please see our subject specific guidelines for people, bands and musicians, companies and organizations and web content and note that if you are closely associated with the subject, our conflict of interest guideline strongly recommends against you creating the article.
If you still think an article is appropriate, see Wikipedia:Your first article. You might also look at Wikipedia:How to write a great article for guidance, and please consider taking a tour through the Wikipedia:Tutorial so that you know how to properly format the article before creation. Hi, can I possibly get some help with the copyright and licensing of the two pictures that I have used in the 'socio-ecological system' article? Availability online is really irrelevant. What is important is the copyright status of the images. Please can you provide links to the online articles so that we can review for copyright? If the relevant articles are not released on terms suitable for Wikipedia, the files will have to be deleted as copyright violations. – ukexpat (talk) 15:08, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Lists of officers as copyvio

I recently ran into a situation where a novice editor had written an article about an organization and had copied a long section about the history of the organization verbatim into the WP article. The copied section ended with a longish list of the holders of various offices in the organization. The editor adequately rewrote a bit of the text, but restored the officers list character-for-character verbatim except for the addition of one current officer not in the original text. The lists were simple, of the nature:
President
1923 - 1924 John Jones
1924 - 1925 Bill Bailey
(and so on)
Does the use of the verbatim officer lists constitute a copyvio or is it fair use? Regards, TransporterMan (TALK) 20:16, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's not a copyvio and it's not fair use. Under US law, no copyright exists in such a list. Thparkth (talk) 20:18, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The only concern that i would voice would be (1) to encourage that novice editor to rewrite the information before posting it to WP; and (2) to evaluate the list of officers because the formatting may need some work. Tiggerjay (talk) 20:57, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Just to be clear to Thparkth's statement, factual data cannot be copyrighted. If the list was one created from personal opinion, there are creative elements in it and thus does become copyrighted, and verbatim copying is inappropriate. Not the case here, but as suggested, its better to reformat to form suitable for WP's purposes. --MASEM (t) 21:02, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Agree. Except just saying 'not copyright violation under US law' (presumably following the Feist decision rejecting the "sweat of the brow" approach). It isn't sufficient, however true, since other jurisdictions do take the view that a simple compilation is copyrightable. The level of originality required is "minimal" and in some cases non-existent. --Sdoradus (talk) 21:14, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unable to Edit Inaccurate Summary

I want to edit - correct an inaccurate summary, the first thing written about a community, where I live, Sun Lakes, Arizona. It is above the Geography portion, which seems to be the first thing editable. How can I edit the inaccurate description of our community that contains several major errors? First, it is NOT a retirement community. It is an "Active Adult" community. Age 19 is the minimum age for permanent residency. Some of the old timers who have lived here since the 80s are now retired but, most of the people still work and there is even a 40s & 50s club. Second, there are three communities, not five, within Sun Lakes. Sun Lakes I is Phase I. The second community, Phase II, is Cottonwood Palo Verde. Palo Verde has two sections, one gated, one not gated. The third community, Phase III, is Oakwood & Ironwood, now known as Iron Oaks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Babyboomer1001 (talkcontribs) 20:35, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The 'edit' tab at the top of the page allows you to edit the entire article. I think, instead, you might be using the [edit] at the side of each section, and there isn't one for the first section.
When you go to the article, you should see this along the top; at the left are tabs for "Article" and "Discussion", and to the right, there is "Read", "Edit", and "View history" (then the 'search' box). That's the 'edit' you want. It'll get you to here - where you can change anything.
Please make sure you give a reliable source (e.g. a newspaper article) for any information you add. For help on how to do that, see WP:REFB.  Chzz  ►  20:53, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I changed the first sentence to contain the phrase you used. Note, though, that the active adult community page is simply a "REDIRECT" to the retirement community article and therefore the meaning of the sentence is still the same, just the wording has changed. Carrie Savage, the voice actress

My name is Carrie Savage, and I am the voice actress. Someone has posted personal information about me on the page THAT IS ALL AND TOTALLY INCORRECT, and must be info. they found about somoene else named Carrie SAvage. There is no personal info. about meor my family, anywhere on the web, and that is because I feel that is private info. Furthermore, since my parents do not even share my name, the info. can not even be researched! I have tried to correct the info. and post a reprpoach to whomever posted that , who should be extremely ashamed, but it keeps getting erased! I need this info. removed immediately, or I believe I may have grounds for a legal law suit! The ONLY INFO., ON THAT PAGE THAT IS CORRECT, BESIDES MY CREDITS, AND THE VERY TOP LINE, IS MY BIRTH DATE! And that is because I put that on the web myself. (My birth date that is!) I am appalled that a website like this exists where anyone can just post anything about anyone else, especially about a publicly known person, that is not only so wrong it may as well be from Mars, but without checking facts or asking permission.

Again, I have tried to correct this info. three times now, but it keeps getting erased and the wrong info. remains!

Please remove all of the personal info. except my birth date from that page, and post a public reproach from me to whomever, just looked up my name online and assumed the info. they found about another person named Carrie Savage (Yes, there are more than one) was about me, and posted it online. Not only should they have checked their facts but they should have asked permission.

Furthermore! I was not born nor have I ever lived anywhere near Atlanta, Georgia! My parents do not even share my last name, I am not married, do not have children and am most certainly NOt married to Grand Jorge! (I think that is another voice actress, Jessica G's husband!) Nor do I even have any brothers! REally please fix this immmediately. I expect to hear from someone soon!

Hello, welcome to Wikipedia. Unfortunately this is a free encyclopedia that anyone can edit, if you can prove in writing that what you see isn't true, then please do. Other than that, there's nothing that can be done. Wikipedia is a website where articles are public to everyone. Furthermore, that reason your attempts to remove the information from Carrie Savage is because you didn't cite a reason nor have it proven that it indeed isn't true. Hope this helps, SwisterTwister (talk) 23:50, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict)

The information you mentioned has been removed. The reason your edits were removed was, because you added commentary within the live article, and your edits (including removal of info) were all 'undone' together. For example you added This info. previously posted here was Wrong, wrong and triple wrong! - that kind of thing should not appear in an article. Use the article talk page for that, which is Talk:Carrie Savage.
Please see Wikipedia:Contact us/Article problem/Factual error (from subject), which has advice on how to deal with any further concerns without running into problems.
I will also make a note on our Biographies of living persons Noticeboard to ensure others watch the article. Best,  Chzz  ►  23:56, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. SwisterTwister, that is incorrect. The information in the bio in e.g. this old version had no references, and therefore the subject of the article - or anyone else - was free to remove them, in accordance with WP:V and WP:BLP policies. They don't have to prove it isn't true. See also WP:BLPEDIT.  Chzz  ►  23:59, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is a problem where some users sometimes see a "View source" tab instead of "Edit" on unprotected pages. If this happens then try clicking "View source" anyway. Would it be possible to make it so that on [[File: type articles that if a specific file is used on a page, that it would be listed on the File's history? The software only knows which pages currently use a file; I don't know of any efficient way to find which pages used to use a file but no longer do so. The current uses are listed in the "File links" part of the file page. Also, if you are looking at a file page, the "What links here" link in the left sidebar should give you this information. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:22, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted post in the talk page of Pietro Badoglio

Few hours ago I wrote a post on the discussion page of article Pietro Badoglio. Later I discovered it does not show. I checked the page history and discovered it had been reverted i.e. deleted, but the name of the user who reverted the page does not show either. However if I am logged in my post does show!!!???

I do not know what this does mean, anyhow I think this fact is absolutely unacceptable and foreign to the spirit of Wikipedia. Please note: actually I did not edit the article according to my views, I just posted some remarks and comments on the talk page in order to inform readers on facts, mostly known to everybody (and accepted by historians) and answer questions asked by other readers in the discussion above. The only speculative point in my post (a tiny part) is the issue of the agreement between B. and Albert Kesselring which is now accepted by many Italians (historians too) as it is the only way to give a plausible explanation to a long series of events: it has been testified indirectly by witnesses on the place.

Whatever the case the suppression of information on a discussion page is a kind of behaviour that I do not think can be tolerated as it amounts to censorship and is in contrast with freedom of speech and research.Aldrasto11 (talk) 12:21, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The only edits I can see that you've made to the talk page of Pietro Badoglio were today, and have not been reverted. I'm afraid I can't see any sign of a previous change, or reversion there. Suppression of anything leaves a "username removed" or "edit summary removed" notice. Could you elaborate? Is it possible you made the comment somewhere, or that you did not save it? Grandiose (me, talk, contribs) 12:29, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
All indications are that it's a cache issue (and you are jumping to large conclusions). You were not reverted; nothing was deleted. Your computer saved a cached version of the page for efficiency of memory use, and is displaying that when you are logged out. Just clear your cache.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:01, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see three edits, made roughly six hours ago, related to "Fascist party membership and other issues". They are all present. Are those the edits in question?--SPhilbrickT 13:02, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This is definitely a cache issue and not a reversion. The cached version could be on your computer, at your ISP, or on one of Wikimedia's servers which hasn't updated for some resaon. The bottom of Talk:Pietro Badoglio should currently say "This page was last modified on 28 May 2011 at 07:26." (or an offset if you are logged in with another time zone than UTC in your preferences). If you see an older time then you are seeing a cached version. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:31, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bill Nye the Science Guy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_nye)

This sentence in the "Bill Nye" article contain erroneous imformation: "In 2004 and 2005, Nye hosted 100 Greatest Discoveries, an award-winning series produced by THINKFilm for The Science Channel and in high definition on the Discovery HD Theater." The error is in the attribution of "THINKFilm" as the producer of the series "100 Greatest Discoveries."

There are two companies named "thinkfilm." One, "thinkiflm", a production company located in Washington, DC (www.thinkfilm-inc.com) is the actual and correct producer of the "100 Greatest Discoveries" series. "THINKFilm" is a defunct/bankrupt film distribution company that was located in Toronto, Canada which had nothing to do with the "100 Greatest Discoveries" project. This confusion of the two similarly named companies should be corrected as the attribution of professional credits for production companies like "thinkfilm" is an important business credit. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.67.25.242 (talk) 17:12, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation and diacriticals

If you have two people of roughly equal importance, and their names only differ in that one name has a diacritical - Zoë Smith and Zoe Smith - for instance... how then would you set up the disambiguation page? - ThafireAndThteel (talk) 18:22, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I would name the page without the diacritical. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:37, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Whereas I would use the diacritic. As long as both are linked from a disambiguation page, then it shouldn't matter too much. Each page should link to the dab page. Mjroots (talk) 20:40, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If there's just the two, I wouldn't bother with a disambiguation page - I'd name them "Zoë Smith" and "Zoe Smith" (which is fine) - and add a hatnote on the top of each - for example, on the top of "Zoe Smith" you'd put something like the English author (example only; picking random info) - which will put,

Template:Other people3

The user uploaded another picture at the same time, shown here - File:CubbyLego.jpg. That one was apparently taken 5 March 2005, using the same model of camera (according to the EXIF information). It would appear to be the same platinum mink tonk from the first photo. Do you also recognize that one?

Why so hard to add photo?

Wow, it is like deciphering an alien code in the dark with music blaring and police dogs attacking. After much searching I uploaded a photo, exactly copied and pasted the precise name into the precise spot in the 'edit' space for the article, deleted the old, and now neither one is visible. Went back to the upload screen, found that the new file is there, tried it again, as above--no success. 3X--no success. Out of ideas on how to decipher vague instructions that when followed lead no where. Took me 15-20 tries to find this page. Bluestem (talk) 20:47, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi I just got a message from user Nortynort about the article Jim Chapman (Canadian) having copyright infringing content. I was under the impression that it was just the second paragraph (which I deleted) that had the copyright material, but I was sent that message after i deleted the paragraph. I do have permission to use the content in question, but I realized that the paragraph that had the content in it was unnesissary, so I deleted it instead. If there is still a problem, I can do the whole "The contents of this website (or page, if you are specifically releasing one section) are available for modification and reuse under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License 3.0 and the GNU Free Documentation License, unversioned with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts." thing, it's just a bit of a hassle. Thanks in advance Goodbucket (talk) 21:26, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It sounds like you have either got permission from the copyright holder, or are the copyright holder. However, we don't know this. In the latter case, see Wikipedia:DCM. In the former, it's probably easier to ask NortyNort or post at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions, which would also be a good venue to get more information if I've understood incorrectly. Nelson Mandela is semi-protected (notice the little picture of a lock in the corner). From the protection log comments it is unlikely to be unprotected again anytime soon. You can suggest changes on the talk page or make the edit using an established Wikipedia account. (Making your own account is "a good thing".) Rmhermen (talk) 23:24, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Converting IP history to a handle

I have been editing as an IP for quite some time. I would like to start an account with a handle (Something clever I hope). Q: Is there any way that my history can be brought over? I have had about 10 or so different IP's (they seem to change every few months, the latest happened today). I have a pretty good idea of the past IP's and the articles I improved. 208.85.0.114 (talk) 23:20, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, out software doesn't allow for this. What you could do is create an account and write on your userpage "I edited using IP#1 from A to B, with IP #2 from B to C, etc." (Do keep in mind that it would allow people to possibly identify you, if that's something you're concerned about). Question about Alexandra Powers

Should the Category:American_atheists go in the article Alexandra_Powers becuase it says in her personal life: Powers does not adhere to any religion. Neptunekh2 (talk) 03:21, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I believe so since atheists don't practice any form of religion. SwisterTwister (talk) 03:24, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not "adhering" to any particular religion is not in any way the same as being an atheist. Please remove the category. And, Neptunekh2, please read WP:BLPCAT, which deals with adding sexuality and religion categories to articles about living people. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 03:50, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

More than that: She say she prays when she feels sad; if she is an atheist, who do you think she pray to? —teb728 t c 21:37, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
An atheist is someone who doesn't believe in a deity. Not adhering to any religion does not mean she doesn't believe in a deity. So we don't have enough information to say she is an atheist. Also WP:BLPCAT, a section of the policy on living people, says "Categories regarding religious beliefs and sexual orientation should not be used unless the subject has publicly self-identified with the belief or orientation in question; and the subject's beliefs or sexual orientation are relevant to their notable activities or public life, according to reliable published sources." There is nothing in the article to say she has self-identified as an atheist nor is it relevant to her notable activities or public life. So it does not belong. Old style versus new style dates

I have a question regarding dates. In the Wikipedia articles, dates before about 1753 are given in which calendar? Are they given in the Old Style (Julian) calendar, or in the New Style (Gregorian) calendar? This question is pretty important. For example, in the article about Blaise Pascal, his year of birth is given as 1623. Is this date already converted to the New Style (Gregorian) calendar, or not?

Tandava9 (talk) 04:40, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"France changed from Julian to Gregorian Calendar on 9 December 1582 (O.S.) where the next day was 20 December 1582 (N.S.)." (from Old Style and New Style dates) "Dates of events in countries using the Gregorian calendar are given in the Gregorian calendar. This includes some of the Continent of Europe from 1582, the British Empire from 14 September 1752, and Russia from 14 February 1918" (from WP:MOSNUM#Calendars). Technical question for footnote experts

At List of postal entities#UPU members, a single footnote is used to source what will be 163 out of 191 entries (once the list is complete). Using the reflist system, this generates a rather long and ugly list of backlinks (a,b,c...aa,ab,...). Is there some way to suppress this or is there a more elegant method? Thanks,  Sandstein  08:40, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You could cheat; see [8] - hope that'll be self-explanatory, from the code. Obviously, it could be done 'neater' with a specific one-off template. But give me a shout otherwise.  Chzz  ►  08:54, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! It still doesn't seem to work correctly with groups, but I'll have to work around this. (The links now go to the ungrouped footnote rather than to the first footnote in the "UPU" group.)  Sandstein  11:56, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mhm; the reference links are numbered, regardless of grouping - starting with zero.

If you look at User:Chzz/Sandstein1, notice if you hover your mouse over the first ref (or click it), it links to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Chzz/Sandstein1#cite_note-0 - and the second reference labelled [mygroup 1], which just happens to be grouped, links to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Chzz/Sandstein1#cite_note-1

So, if you wanted those others to link to that, you'd need to use #cite_note-1 (or, rather, Whatever you want displayed). See User:Chzz/Sandstein2.

I'm afraid the reference numbers (and thus the links) are out of our control, so if people add another ref above 'yours', that'll screw things up. I don't know of a way around that, unless... well, I suppose you could put in a manual anchor thingy using #tag, and link to that...but that'd make the code a bit more complex. Er. You can kinda see what I mean in User:Chzz/help/footnoteref?

You're work-around looks fine though. But if you need any further help, give me a shout. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  01:57, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Signature limit too restrictive

Hi,

I'm trying to set the following as my signature, but Wikipedia won't let me, as it's above the 255-character limit:

<span style="font-family:Tahoma">&mdash;<span style="color:blue">Tommyjb</span> <span style="color:orange">Talk!</span> <span style="font-size:x-small">(CURRENTTIME, CURRENTDAY CURRENTMONTHNAME CURRENTYEAR)</span>

Instead, I'm having to use the deprecated <font> tag:

<font face="Tahoma">—<font color="blue">Tommyjb</font> <font color="orange">Talk!</font> <small>(, )</small></font>

My desired signature is 284 characters long. Would I be able to get an signature extention? I'd rather not have to use a depreciated HTML tag.

Tommyjb Talk! (19:23, 29 May 2011)

What's wrong with a plain signature? Personally, I think the current limit is too lax. I'd like to see no custom sigs at all. DuncanHill (talk) 19:28, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There are a number of Wikipedian who will just chop off your signature on their talk pages if it takes up more than a given number of lines in an edit box, and others who are distinctly unimpressed with the ostentation of showy signatures. Your current one looks fine. Bielle (talk) 19:37, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Your signature when used on a talk page is much shorter than the 255-character limit; it's just those magic words that make it too long for the preference box. You could experiment by putting the markup in a sub-page, User:Tommyjb/sig, and then configuring your signature as .
When you create the subpage you will have to replace each "subst:" with <includeonly>subst:</includeonly> so that the magic words are not lost when you save the subpage. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:48, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
WP:SIG#NoTemplates suggests using a template like that is forbidden. Rehevkor 20:04, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Actually is says that substitution is permissible but discouraged. From the sounds of the conversation above it appears that this would be one of the exceptions to why it is discouraged. It sounds like it would be shorter than the 255 character limit if it is substituted if I am reading right. GB fan (talk) 20:10, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Many people object to long sigs due to their look when pages you have signed are being edited. Please keep your sig short enough so as not to be disruptive. 216.93.212.245 (talk) 20:00, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect putting the date in brackets like that could screw up bots recognising it as a signature too. Rehevkor 20:06, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I don't know much about Wikipedia bots. I wonder whether that will be a problem. Tommyjb Talk! (20:38, 29 May 2011)

If someone puts in an article an external link to a video that I believe is a copyright violation, do I handle such a problem based on the instructions at WP:CP or WP:MCQ? What in the world is the context to link to that?! Point the user to WP:YOUTUBE and let them know it is a copyright violation to link to copyrighted videos. CTJF83 22:43, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's for the Goldie Hawn article. It's a collage of copyrighted film material plus a background audio of a copyrighted song, apparently put together by some user who then posted it to YouTube. To me, it's a clear copyright violation, but I suppose one could try to argue fair use. However, in my view, Wikipedia editors, in this kind of situation, should not be appointing themselves federal judges and making a fair use determination, which is difficult enough to do even for judges. In any event, I pointed all this out to the editor who wanted to insert it. If you want to read our extended discussion on the Hawn Talk page, feel free. I'm not continuing the discussion with him, and I told him so. I already went much further and spent more time on it than it deserved. Problem with "Tyler Reks" page

Tyler Reks (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

The page lists incorrect information under "Personal life" regarding a statement I purportedly made on Twitter. The article states that my wife's name is "Tyler", when in actuality it is "Priscilla". It also states that I states people would chant "Reks Wrecks", which I didn't. I've attempted to remove the false data on numerous occasions only to have it reappear a day later. The reference (#9) is to a blog with an incorrect quote from a Twitter response. The entire article in that section should be removed for incorrect information.

For verification please contact me via Direct Message on my verified Twitter Account, if necessary.

Thank you,

registering awareness ribbon colours

Hi i am working with a group of parents to raise awareness of global developmental delay and we was wondering how we can add our awareness colours to your list of awareness ribbons colour directory? We have already created awareness wristbands in the colours yellow band with black writing and once we have had a qoute for actual ribbons they will be yellow ribbons with black writing on them to saying GDD AWARENESS. many thanks Jan — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.13.224.193 (talk) 21:32, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It hasn't ever yet experimentally been proven. It is not existing human knowledge: It is a postulate, or maybe a quess!! So you give me a dammed good answer, why my new work on cosmology is removed!! "Hidden" revisions of a page (offline) ??

Hello,

Sorry to disturb you but I experiment a problem on the page Talk:Dominique Strauss-Kahn sexual assault case. I don't know how to resolve it ? I noticed that the discussions on this page seems to be "locked", and all contributions after May 26th are "hidden" to anonymous users (not connected). This is very strange.

I tried to purge cache with the parameter "?action=purge" but nothing appens. Then, I saw on mediawiki that some pages revisions can be "hidden" by using "RevisionDelete" or "Extension:Oversight". I am questionning myself, and maybe an user/admin add this page on "hide revisions/log" with malice ??

Could you help me, and explain to me why all contributions of this page after May 26th are hidden to offline users ?? Thanks a lot !

Nota : You must be "offline" to see the problems (not connected with your login/password)

Esthertree (talk) 22:16, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is no way to hide comments from only users who are not logged in (other than something called 'pending changes', but we're not using that any more, and it was never used on talk pages).
Can you see, for example, this? That was added on 29th.
Could it be, perhaps, that your browser is struggling because of the sheer size of that talk page? It's quite a big one, at 391 kB.
Are you using quite an old web browser? Under certain environments, Firefox 2.0 and Internet Explorer 6 are known to have difficulty loading articles over about 400 KB.10
If you think it might be browser-related, perhaps you could try updating it. Or, give us more details.
I assure you though, nothing is being hidden. If items are revision-deleted, then only admins can see them - it's just like deletion of an entire page. And if they're oversighted (or 'suppressed'), then only the oversight team can see them (not even admins).
But, there is no function that hides things only from anon users.  Chzz  ►  01:28, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(Incidentally - I did log out, and check. The page looks identical, to me, whether I'm logged in or not)  Chzz  ►  01:29, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The problem occurs for me too, but I can fix it. My fix might work for you too. Try adding &limit=50 after the page title and before the 'history' part (so the full URL is http://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Talk:Dominique_Strauss-Kahn_sexual_assault_case&limit=50&action=history) I have no idea what causes this but I don't think it's possible that it's related to page hiding or oversight, because even then you'd at least see a line with the words crossed out. 1. Should Alexandra Powers go under the Category:Former_Buddhists since her personal life has a quote that says "I was a Buddhist for about six months."? 2. Also in Alexandra's mothers article Katharyn_Powers should it say in personal life that she is divorced and that her ex husband teaches acting? I found a source: http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,308844,00.htm Neptunekh2 (talk) 01:47, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

(To both question) - sure, why not, if you want to - be bold. If someone doesn't like it, they can change it back. If you are not too sure - or if someone does remove it - then discuss it on the article talk pages, which are, respectively, Talk:Alexandra Powers and Talk:Katharyn_Powers. See WP:BRD.
Just be extra-careful on any biography of a living person to ensure you cite a reliable source. That ew.com ref looks OK to me. If in doubt as to whether something is a good source, you can always ask on Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard (shortcut, WP:RSN).
Because BLP's (bio's of living people) need extra care, it's worth reading WP:BLP too.  Chzz  ►  02:05, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I would go with "No" for #1. WP:BLPCAT, which you've been referred to before, says that they should be in the religious category only if "...the subject has publicly self-identified with the belief or orientation in question; and the subject's beliefs or sexual orientation are relevant..." She claims to have been a Buddhist for six months. They don't self identify as that now and people experiment with religions throughout their lives. Dismas|(talk) 02:14, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

User en

The left margin is far bigger than the right margin. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Images in userspace

Per Wikipedia:NFCC#9. Why? Rcsprinter (talk) 10:21, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Because they are copyrighted so we just cant use them everywhere, when we use them in an article we use a non-free-use rationale we have to make a case why the copyrighted images should be used. The use in articles is restricted so we only use copyrighted images under certain conditions. On user pages and other non-article pages none of those conditions would every be satisfied because they would be used for decoration, hence the ban. MilborneOne (talk) 10:38, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Try keying "userspace" into the "Search the archives" at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content, and you will find a selection of past discussions. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:41, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I would explain it as a compromise between the point of view that a free encyclopdia should have no non-free content and the point of view that a quality encyclopedia needs non-free content. The compromise is that non-free content is permitted when the encyclopedia actually needs it (and it is permitted under fair use law). The encyclopedia doesn't need it except in articles. —teb728 t c 11:20, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback - quote marks

Your articles frequently use punctuation marks outside quote marks. Punctuation marks always belong inside the quote marks, in English version anyway. Modern technology has diminished the use of proper language but if you have a choice to get it wrong or get it right, you should get it right. kcd1976 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.217.195.44 (talk) 10:40, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

See the Wikipedia style guide - "On Wikipedia, place all punctuation marks inside the quotation marks if they are part of the quoted material and outside if they are not". You are welcome to propose a change to the style guide, by posting at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style, but I am sure the point has been discussed extensively over the years. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:45, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, they do not "belong inside". They belong outside. For reasons I cannot fathom, some Americans decided to adopt a silly rule. WP has chosen a more reasonable rule.--SPhilbrickT 12:20, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It has to do with the practicalities of typesetting with actual type (as opposed to Linotype, etc.) Punctuation inside quotes was a little less likely to break off; or so I've been told. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:50, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Shifting existing article to create disambiguation page?

I have created a Wikipedia entry for "Drew Berry (animator)". A page for "Drew Berry" (a journalist) already exists. I think it would be appropriate for the page "Drew Berry" to become a disambiguation page rather than belonging to the journalist, especially as the first sentence of "Drew Berry" (the journalist) begins "Drew Berry is an Emmy Award-winning...", which is also true of "Drew Berry (animator)" who also has an Emmy- so may be confusing for people searching for the animator rather than the journalist.

What I'm hoping to do is to create

• Drew Berry <-disambiguation page.
• Drew Berry (animator)
• Drew Berry (journalist)

My questions are:

• is it ok to shift the content as it stands from the current "Drew Berry" to a new page, "Drew Berry (journalist)" so "Drew Berry" can then be written as a disambiguation page?
• if I do this, is there a way to locate the current wikipedia links to "Drew Berry" and redirect them to "Drew Berry (journalist)"? I am not intending to cause problems for Drew Berry (journalist); I just think there will be people searching for "Drew Berry (animator)" who could be confused between the two if they land on the journalist's page.

Thanks Vanessa.

Vsolomon (talk) 11:53, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Normally we don't create a disambiguation page for two articles. One article has a hatnote directing people to the other article. I have added a hat note on Drew Berry telling people if they are looking for the animator to go to Drew Berry (animator). Just as a side note the Drew Berry article need to be worked on. How can i turn the WIKIPEDIA background color into black?

turning background color into black makes it easier to read for many people.

also, computers save energy by displaying black background tone rather than white, if wikipedia did this, they would help the world save a lot of energy.

one example for inspiration: blackle.com

A Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year. what about wiki???

thank you very much — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.113.62.191 (talk) 14:42, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A black background is very hard for most of us to read, and would not be appropriate for editing at all. Bielle (talk) 14:56, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you create an account and log in then you can select "Use a black background with green text on the Monobook skin" at Special:Preferences#preftab-9. It may give unfortunate colors for some things. The power reduction is generally for CRT monitors which are less used today. LCD monitors often use more power when black. See http://techlogg.com/2010/05/black-vs-white-screen-power-consumption-24-more-monitors-tested/17. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:15, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Many browsers allow you to blackify yourself. For example, in Firefox, go to tools → options → content tab → colors → change the background to black and the text to whatever you'd like and then untick the option for "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selection above."--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:50, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
