Ganga Das (Template:Lang-hi) (1823–1913) was a revered saint of udasi sect and known for piety and Hindi poetry. He was born on the day of Basant Panchami in year 1823 in village Rasulpur Bahlolpur of Ghaziabad district in the family of Hindu Jat of Munder Gotra.[1]
Childhood
His childhood name was Gangabaksh but became Gangadas after consecration in udasi sect under Baba Vishnudas Udasin at Sedepur district Bulandshahr at the age of 12.[2]
Role in Hindi literature
His contribution to Hindi poetry has been considered unparalleled. Earlier his compositions were not available due to which his contributions were not recognized. He composed about 50 kavyagranthas and thousands of padas. About 45 kavyagranthas and 3000 thousands padas have been discovered. He is known as Bhismpita of the Hindi poetry.[3] Following is one example of kavit by Ganga Das:४९९ ॥ श्री गंगा दास जी ॥ कवित
झूलत कदम तरे मदन गोपाल लाल, बाल हैं बिशाल झुकि झोंकनि झुलावती।१। कोई सखी गावती बजावती रिझावती, घुमड़ि घुमड़ि घटा घेरि घेरि आवती।२। परत फुहार सुकुमार के बदन पर, बसन सुरंग रंग अंग छबि छावती।३। कहैं गंगादास रितु सावन स्वहावन है, पावन पुनित लखि रीझि कै मनावती।४।[4]
Death
He died on bhadrapada krishnashtami (Janmashtmi) in year 1913.
