Pioneer Middle School is a school in Tustin, California, and is part of the Tustin Unified School District. It is named after the street it is on, Pioneer Rd. Currently, it is the newest middle school in the district, with the newest high school being Arnold O. Beckman High School, and newest overall school being Orchard Hills School. It currently enrolls students in sixth through eighth grade. Pioneer Middle School is a 2008 Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, a two time winner of the California Distinguished School award, in 2003, and in 2007, and a multiple award winner for its yearbook. Students from Pioneer Middle School then move on to the award winning state-of-the-art campus of Arnold O. Beckman High School.
Pioneer Middle School's official school motto is "Maximizing Every Student's Academic Potential and Personal Responsibility."
Tutorial Program
Pioneer Middle School's academic strategy is a plan to ensure that all students get the help they need early on to succeed. This plan included "Tutorial", a 27-minute period offered every Tuesday and Thursday for students to utilize to go to classrooms for which they need extra help, or need to make up tests.[1]
Yearbooks
Pioneer Middle School has also won numerous awards for its outstanding quality of yearbooks. Pioneer received the Crown Award in 2006, the National Pacemaker Award, given in 2007 and 2010 for journalism excellence.[2]
Orange County school rankings
According to a study done by the OC Register, Pioneer Middle School is the "best middle school in OC" in 2008.[3] The school has been named the "best middle school in OC" for a second time in 2010, keeping its title for number 1 school in O.C. [4]
With an API of 939 in 2010, Pioneer shows consistent growth year after year and consistently ranks among the top 1% of California schools, and among the top schools in the United States. [5]

Pioneer participates in the Science Olympiad Competition every year. For the past 4 years, Pioneer's Olympiad Program has steadily improved, going from a ranking of 3rd in regional competitions to 1st. Every year, Pioneer Middle School has advanced to the state-level competitions. In 2011, during Pioneer's most successful year in the state-level competitions, Pioneer earned 6th place overall. [8]
Mentoring Program
Mentoring is a program in which selected 8th grade students help incoming 6th graders acclimate to the positive culture of Pioneer Middle School. From the first day of their 8th grade year, Mentors meet with a group of five to eight 6th grade students throughout the year during the school day two to four times per month. During these times, Mentors and 6th graders will participate in activities and discussions that address topics such as: transitioning to middle school, establishing good work and study habits, getting involved in extracurricular activities, and becoming a R.E.A.L. Wildcat. [9]
