Matthew McDaniel is an American activist who lives in Thailand. He has been working with the Akha tribe since 1991.
On April 18, 2004 he was arrested at Thailand's border with Myanmar.
Matthew McDaniel has worked continuously to improve human rights for the Akha people and guarantee that they have the same freedoms to choose as anyone in a free society.
He is opposed to mission efforts to rewrite their history and eradicate their culture which includes an extensive language and oral history and makes up their unique identity.
He opposes coercive mission conversion tactics, or the removal of Akha children from their families and villages.
He opposes the US Drug War which has profiled the Akha for arrest and prosecution as well as other violence at a much higher rate than national societies.
He continues to monitor and contact Akhas in the prisons of Thailand.
His work is ongoing to assist the Akha people of Myanmar, China, Laos and Thailand.
